As per reports coming in, OTT players and video streaming services can soon start streaming their videos in high quality, again.

There has been no confirmation on this though, but chances are high that they will soon make a formal announcement.

Here is the reason why.

COAI To Streaming Services: You Can Stream In High Quality Now

MediaNama reports that The Cellular Operators Association or COAI has now allowed OTTs and video streaming services to start streaming videos in high quality.

This has been confirmed by The Cellular Operators Association of India’s Director General Rajan Mathews, who has said that the streaming services can now chalk out plans with the mobile operators, and start streaming in high quality, once again.

However, each streaming service need to talk with the mobile operators, and make it happen.

COAI is India’s most powerful telecom lobby, and its members are Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, Jio, and other telcos.

Streaming Quality Was Reduced Due To Lockdown

When the lockdown started in India in the month of March, COAI had asked all streaming services to stream their videos in low quality.

This request was made by COAI on behalf of Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-Idea because most of the employees were working from home, and if most of the users of these streaming services were watching videos in high quality, then it would have created a major issue.

As soon as the request was made, Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and all other OTTs and video streaming services started streaming videos in low quality to save bandwidth.

But now, since the lockdown has been almost removed from the country barring containment zones, offices are open. 

Hence, COAI has now allowed the streaming services to start high quality video streaming, like before.

MedianNama reached out to Google, Netflix and Amazon for their comments, but have received no response.

There has no response from Airtel, Vodafone-Idea and Jio as well.

Interestingly, the surge in data consumption during lockdown has been just 15%, which is way less than what was expected.
