UK Gave 93% More Student Visas To Indians In 2019; Indian Students Not Interested In USA?
More and more Indians are migrating towards higher studies outside the country. America has been a very difficult area to tap in post Trump’s invasion. We have covered stories wherein you can find alternate options like Canada, which is becoming a great destination for Indians wanting to settle or complete their masters.
Today, we bring another such location which could turn out to be a potential hub for you. It has been found that over 37,500 Indian students joined UK universities in 2019, registering a 93% jump in the number of study visas granted by Britain.
UK: Destination for Higher Studies
The UK Immigration Statistics showed its data on Thursday, as per which there was a 93% jump in study visas granted by Britain to Indian students.
The data comes months after the UK announced the introduction of post-study work permit of two years for international students called the Graduate Immigration Route. As per the UK Government, this will be applicable to students graduating from the summer of 2021.
The number of Indian students receiving a study visa in 2019 was 37,540, while in 2018: 19,479. Data showed Indians also received 57,199 Tier 2 skilled work visas in 2019, registering a 3% increase from 2018.
This represents the largest number of visas issued to Indian students over the last eight years. Indians are currently the fastest growing nationality for student visas.
An Indian expert said the spike was not surprising and 2020 may see this number going up further. The UK numbers are going up largely because of three reasons:
- GIR announced in October 2019 allowing post-study permit from 2021
- relative inexpensiveness of education in the UK compared to the US
- Increasing cost of Indian education in courses like management at top colleges.
Alos, while UK masters from top institutes are almost the same as those from top US institutions, the fee structure is 30-40% less in the UK. After India, the US (9,240) received the second highest number of Tier 2 work visas. In 2019, UK granted 113,958 tier 2 work visas.
