Every AC In India Will Have 24 Degree Default Temperature: What This Means, How Will It Impact You?

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has now mandated that every Air Conditioner sold in India will have a default temperature of 24 degrees.

What does this exactly mean? And how will this impact you?

Keep reading to find out!

Default Temperature Set To 24 Degree For Every AC

As per the new energy performance standards shared by  The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), it has been mandated that every Air Conditioner sold in India should have default temperature as 24 degrees.

This means that when a new AC is bought and switched on for the first time, then the default temperature will be 24 degrees.

The notification said, “Default setting is the setting at which a machine comes from the factory. Therefore, when the machine is switched on then it will have a preset temperature of 24-degrees-Celsius,”

This will apply to all ACs sold in India under star-labeled ratings, from BEE. These ratings are provided based on the energy consumption and quality standard of the manufactured ACs sold in India.

What Does This Mean?

This new notification for room air conditioners in India has been made to save electricity.

As per studies, for every 1 degree of temperature which we increased in the AC, upto 6% electricity can be saved.

Now, in India, the default temperature for ACs used to be 20-21 degrees. If its increased to 24 degrees, then up to 24% of electricity can be saved.

Ministry of Power explained: “Considering change from 20degree Celsius to 24 degree Celsius, there is potential to increase at least 4 degrees Celsius, which will lead to savings of about 24% of electricity,”

How Will You Be Impacted?

Nothing to panic here!

Once the AC is switched on, you as the end-user can always change the temperature to whatever degree you wish.

However, the default setting will be 24 degrees, and as per studies, it has been found that 20-40% of all AC users never change their temperature setting, and it is always on in the default mode.

By setting the default mode to 24 degrees, Govt. aims to save electricity, and generate more awareness about the electricity-saving modes.

Other countries too, are following these mandates: For example, in Japan, the default temperature setting for ACs is 28 degrees, whereas, in California, the users cannot lower the temperature of an AC below 26 degrees.
