One of the leading airlines, IndiGo, has been slapped with a huge fine of Rs. 50,000 as compensation to a customer for hardships that the customer had to face during a journey.

The Consumer Forum has also ordered the airlines to refund the full amount of the ticket that the passengers had paid in addition to the compensation.

The astonishing part is that despite the customer approaching the airlines multiple times to address the issue, IndiGo turned an absolute blind eye to the issue.

Customer Finds Cockroach In Seat Pocket of IndiGo; Registers Complaint

A complaint was filed with the Consumer Forum by Skand Bajpai and Surabhi Bharadwaj, residents of Kothrud part of Pune against IndiGo airlines. The complainants argued that they went through a cumbersome experience through their journey.

The passengers had booked their tickets worth Rs. 8574 with the airlines. During the journey, one of the passengers, Bharadwaj, found out that there was a cockroach in the pocket of her seat.

She approached the airline representative, where she was told to register the complaint through an email, instead of addressing the issue directly. She was also denied a complaint book and told to file a complaint at Delhi.

She then approached the consumer service department at Delhi airport. On showing the pictures of the cockroach, she was again told to write an email.

Bajpai, too faced hardships while getting his wheelchair during his journey, which he asked for as he was injured. He was provided with one after much persuasion and requests. He, along with Bharadwaj also faced problems with cockroaches in the airline.

IndiGo Airlines Ignores Complaints; Asked To Pay Compensation and Ticket Refund

Despite multiple attempts made by the complainant, IndiGo refused to pay much heed to the complaints.

The forum said, “It was the responsibility of the airline to clean the flight. Insects like cockroaches can spread communicable diseases. When the passengers pointed out the substandard service, it was the airline’s responsibility to address their issue to make sure that they did not face physical, mental and financial harassment.”

The forum then directed IndiGo to pay a refund the full amount of the ticket and a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the complainants.
