The national broadcaster, Prasar Bharati has requested TRAI to make the mandatory channels, such as Doordarshan, available for people who haven’t subscribed for those channels.

The DD channels have been made mandatory for every active subscriber, and now, they will also be available for those subscribers who aren’t active either.

Prasar Bharati Requests TRAI To Mandate DD Channels To Inactive Subscribers

The national broadcaster has requested the TRAI to make Doordarshan channels available for inactive subscribers too.

This means that if approved by TRAI, about 25 channels will be available for the active and inactive subscribers.

Prasar Bharati is of the opinion that the Doordarshan channels should not be linked with network capacity, tariff charges and technology of the platform. And this means that no matter what the NCF (Network Capacity Fee) is paid by the subscribers, and no matter what technology they use, customers should be able to access the DD channels.

Prasar Bharati said, “In the context of the consultation issues, Prasar Bharati is of the view that, in the larger public interest, the channels notified by the Central Government shall be made available to subscribers over and above the network capacity subscribed by the subscriber without any additional monetary burden on the subscriber.”

Prasar Bharati also said that this would be in compliance with the original intention of the Cable TV Act.

News Of National Importance Should Be Available To Inactive Users Too

What is the reason behind this request by Prasar Bharati to the TRAI? This is being done so as to make the benefits of public broadcasting services available for subscribers. Also, this will take care that even inactivated subscribers will be privy to any information of national importance that is being broadcasted.

The national broadcaster wrote that the STBs are not technically interoperable as of yet, and hence the Prasar Bharati is of the opinion that if the subscription is not renewed, the notified channels will be available to such subscribers too.

In order to make it up to the DPOs, Prasar Bharati has also said that any repair and maintenance charges will have to be borne by the subscriber as per the rates that have been prescribed by the operator. Also, this will help to keep the e-waste in check.

The 25 channels of Doordarshan have already been mandatory for active subscribers even if they have not subscribed for it.
