Chennai Startup Makes A Device Which Saves 95% Of Water Use: Can This Solve World’s Water Problems?

Chennai, India’s one of the largest city is facing a severe water crisis leaving its lakhs of inhabitants suffering. According to the Central Water Commission, there is a 41% rainfall deficit this year till mid-June which had a direct impact on the Chennai’s four main reservoirs leaving them at a storage level of less than 1%.

If this is not alarming enough, according to a report by NITI Aayog, 21 cities in India including Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru will run out of groundwater by 2020. This affects 1 million people, with 40% of India’s population will not have access to drinking water by 2030.

Aftermath Of The Devastating Water Crisis

The brutal after effects have forced commercial establishments such as hotels, and restaurants to close down as with the failing rain, the prices of the vegetables have shot up.

It has been a common sight to watch people waiting in long queues for a pot of water from water tankers. IT firms have cut down on operations requesting some staff to work from home.

Solution: A device That Saves More Than 95% Of Water?

Earth Fokus, a Chennai based startup that works towards developing sustainable solutions for problems that affect our environment with products such as Qua Mist and Eco Mist that turns water into a fine mist and saves about 95% of water.

The product which was launched in 2017, has gained much more popularity with increased sales in the last couple of months than in the last two years put together due to the crippling drought that has hit the city.

How does Qua Mist Work

The device comprises of a lead-free brass aerator that fits into the tap along with a washer. It has a small spout to which you attach a triangular cap with a 1 mm hole.

In order to increase your water flow, all you have to do is twist the cap that converts the mist into a high-pressure steady stream or also called as the jet mode that still saves around 85% of water. Qua Mist is easy to install and takes less than 30 seconds to fit without any help from a plumber!

                                                     
Eco Mist: Device Created For Corporate Needs

Many Corporates such as Cognizant, HCL, Accenture, TCS, Wipro, and Ford have started to invest in these water saving devices in their offices. In fact, Cognizant was among the 1st client to adopt this product in all of its offices across the country.

Eco Mist is essentially the same product as Qua Mist but has no external cap, it fits entirely inside the tap.

 The Results Were Astonishing

Your average water tap releases as much as  – 10 litres of water per minute. But with Qua Mist you cut that down to about 600 ml per minute.

Also, the change that Cognizant noticed was that after they began using  Eco Mist, they had managed to save above 7-kilolitres of water per day per building. 

India still has a long way to go and with how severe the present condition looks, it calls for global attention.
