Whatsapp has been reportedly working on its “dark mode” feature for some time now. Almost every major application like Gmail, Google, Amazon Kindle, and even Facebook messenger has a dark mode. It seems like everybody is embracing the dark side which is great as it not only saves battery life but also looks better.

Unfortunately, Whatsapp hasn’t released any solid response on when it plans to roll out this much-awaited feature. However, if you are in a hurry and can’t wait any longer, there are few alternatives that can darken your app just as effectively as the official dark theme toggle when it rolls out.

Dark Mode For Android Users

If you are an Android user, you need to be running the latest beta version of Android Q or Android 10 to apply a dark theme to your Whatsapp.

The reason being Android Q comes with a native dark mode feature that needs to be enabled first to be able to tweak it further to work with Whatsapp.

Follow the mentioned steps to apply Dark Theme to all the apps:

Step 1: To Enable Android 10’s Dark Theme

As mentioned, you’ll need to first enable Android 10’s native dark theme in order to turn on the feature for Whatsapp.

To do so, go to your Settings- > Display- > Select Theme and choose the Dark option.

Step 2: Enable Developers Options

After you enable the dark mode, you’ll need to enable the “Developers Option”.To do so, head to your “About Phone” in settings, then tap on “Build Number” seven times.

Once the notification appears, go back to the main setting page and follow the below steps to get to  “Developers Option”

Setting- > System – > Advanced – > Developers Options

When you open the Developers option, select “Override force-dark” to make Android 10’s dark theme applicable to all apps, including Whatsapp.

Step 3: Completely Darken Whatsapp (Optional)

When you enable “Override force-dark”, Whatsapp will have a dark theme applied all throughout its UI but the message threads will still however have the light, default wallpaper set.

If you wish to change that, go to WhatsApp setting and click on chats options where select “Wallpaper” followed by “No wallpaper” to fully darken your threads.

Dark Mode For iOS users

The process is much simpler for iOS 11 and iOS 12. The users need to enable the “Invert Color” option to give the darker look to the Whatsapp.

In order to do that, go to Settings- > General- > Accessibility -> Display Accommodations- > Invert Colors – > Smart Invert

The “Smart Invert” toggle gives the darker personality to your Whatsapp and the apps installed.

These alternatives are a great way to get a darker theme if you don’t have the patience to wait anymore.
