Republic Day Sales

Traditionally, Republic Day has been a major event for retailers across India. Big Bazaar refined this art and science of Republic Day sales and discount in the last 10 years, which has been smartly picked by online retailers and e-commerce biggies to push their sales.

Republic Day sales in the online world usually start from the first day of the week in which Republic Day or January 26th happens to fall and end a day prior to January 26th.

Just like last few years, this year too, Republic Day online sale and the discount was heavily promoted by both Flipkart and Amazon, India’s largest e-commerce portals, and massive discounts up to 80% were announced.

However now, as the Republic Day sales are over, claims over ‘victory’ has surfaced; and not surprisingly, both Amazon and Flipkart have claimed the fame to victory.

Amazon: We Sold 2X More Than Flipkart

Amazon India triggered the battle when they claimed that they have sold 2X items, compared to Flipkart.

2018’s first major discount event started for Amazon with the ‘Great Indian Sale’ from January 20 to 24th, and Prime members received a 12-hour early access on January 20th.

As per Amazon India’s claims, they were able to sell more and add new customers from Tier 2 cities as well.

Now, Amazon India has relied on actual data provided by a survey conducted by Kantar IMRB which asked 32,000 online shoppers across 200 cities regarding their choice of e-commerce portal this Republic Day.

In their statement, Amazon said,

“Amazon saw the highest share of orders with 2X orders than nearest competition in the Indian e-commerce industry, nearly double the number of transacting customers,”

As per Manish Tiwary, vice-president of category management at Amazon India, Amazon India acquired record number of new customers, and 85% of all new customers came from Tier 2 cities.

Flipkart: We Captured 60% Of The Market

Meanwhile, Flipkart, Amazon’s arch-rival in India has dismissed Amazon’s claims, and have declared that they were #1 in this Republic Day sales.

Flipkart’s Republic Day Sale was conducted between January 21 and 23rd, and despite just three days compared to Amazon India’s 5 days of sale, they claimed that they captured 65% of the market share.

Smrithi Ravichandran, senior director at Flipkart said,

“During the three-day period, our share of the e-tail market would be between 60-65%.”

As per Flipkart, mobiles, fashion and large appliances were the hottest selling products on Flipkart, and in these categories, Flipkart was able to generate 2X sale compared to Amazon.

Smrithi said,

“On the back of a stellar sale, Flipkart continues to maintain the lead as the largest e-commerce player in the country,”

However, no survey data was shared by Flipkart on these claims.
