Here is the first news that has come out – The price of the MHRD’s Aakash Tablet is going to be Rs. 2276 and it will be available in retail. It was previously thought that it will only be available to students. But that’s not the case, it will be available to everyone at that cost.

Additionally, although we are not able to confirm this 100%, students are NOT going to have subsidized rate of Rs. 1200 (we have yet to confirm this…) as widely anticipated. It will be at same cost of Rs. 2276!

At today’s rate, the Tablet cost works out to about USD 46.5 unlike the previously announced USD 35.

Arun Prabhudesai But cleary 3G is missing , that would help get better content on to those tabs. How many have wifi's in suburban/rural areas. As on now 3G is also not there ,but will soon be there in those regions.

people tend to forget whom this product was made for… this is for the poor and underprivileged… who has never experienced internet or computers… do you really think they care about webcams and 3G???

one can connect a 3G dongle on the USB port to get good internet speed… besides I think you can connect a usb camera as well. The retail version has a SIM modem built in anyways.

I think there must be some further modifications like edge, camera & some other means(like data cable or bluetooth) to connect with the PC/laptop/netbooks in this tab. I'm sure if these features are included, it is the best ever deal to destroy the market of PC's as well as smartphones.
