The study

The survey takes in responses to four questions to gauge “people’s sense of personal security and their personal experiences with crime and law enforcement”.

It has interviewed about 127,000 people in over 120 countries.

Most and least secure

Taliban-captured Afghanistan is the least secure country for the third year.

Region-wise, East Asia as the most secure followed by Southeast Asia.

Where India stands

India scored 80 points below its neighbours Pakistan and Sri Lanka but was placed above the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.

Southeast Asia was home to the largest gains in confidence thanks to Singapore and Indonesia’s improved police services.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan maintained the lowest score in the last two surveys in 2018 and 2019.

But it did improve its score relatively due to a drop in violence following the end of the Taliban’s insurgency.

How it’s going in N. America

North America and Western Europe have lost ground on the other hand.

This is mainly because of a falling confidence in the police following the killing of George Floyd which sparked a racial injustice movement.
