Strong numbers

Maruti Suzuki’s Executive Director Shashank Srivastava has revealed that bookings have crossed the 50,000 mark, and that 44-45% of these are for the Strong Hybrid variants.

Meanwhile the recently launched Brezza has clocked over 106,000 bookings so far.

The Grand Vitara will be Maruti Suzuki’s first Strong Hybrid car for the Indian market, and the technology for this has been supplied by Toyota.

Toyota version

Toyota is manufacturing the vehicles at its Bidadi factory near Bengaluru, alongside a similar SUV called the Hyryder Urban Cruiser.

The Hyryder will get a Toyota badge and be sold from Toyota dealerships.

The Grand Vitara will feature a Maruti Suzuki badge and will be sold through NEXA dealerships.

It gets two powertrains: a mild hybrid and a strong hybrid.

Mild hybrid

The mild hybrid is a 1.5 liter-4 cylinder naturally aspirated K15C engine that makes 102 Bp-135 Nm.

This motor is paired with a Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System (mild hybrid) that assists during hard acceleration.

Brake energy regeneration comes standard with the mild hybrid.

Gearbox options include 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic.

Strong hybrid

The strong hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.5 liter-4 cylinder TNGA naturally aspirated petrol engine running the Atkinson’s cycle.

It makes 91 Bhp-122 Nm, and is paired with an electric motor that produces 78 Bhp-141 Nm.

The strong hybrid is offered with a single gearbox option: a CVT automatic.

This variant can also be driven for about 25 kilometers in all-electric mode.

Launch, competition, pricing

Srivastava has said that the Grand Vitara will start selling sometime towards the end of September and its deliveries will commence in early October 2022.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is also likely to be launched at a similar time.

Both SUVs will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the Nissan Kicks in price terms.

Grand Vitara is expected to have an aggressive starting price of around Rs. 9.35 lakh

The range-topping model could be priced around Rs. 19.5 lakh.
