The post pandemic world is being defined by increased business activities, people starting to travel from one place to another and offices starting to work on an offline/hybrid basis. Things are starting to reset to their pre-pandemic forms.

In a similar feat, a global travel data provider Official Airline Guide or OAG has published a recent report, citing the airports across the world with the most traffic or the busiest airports across the world in the month of March 2022.

According to this report, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has emerged as the second busiest airport in the world, after the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, US.

In April 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic had struck, Delhi’s IGI airport ranked at the 23rd position in the list of the busiest airports across the world.

Delhi Airport: 2nd Busiest in the World

From 2019 to 2022, pre to post Covid-19 world, Delhi’s IGI airport has jumped from being the 23rd busiest airport in the world to the 2nd busiest.

According to an OAG report, a total of 3.61 million seats were booked from the Delhi airport, followed by Dubai airport which saw 3.55 million seats booked in Mar 2022.

The world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Atlanta saw a total of 4.42 million seats booked in the month.

London’s Heathrow airport ranked 4th with 3.51 million bookings in the month, followed by the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport with 3.46 million bookings.

According to Airports Authority of India’s data, Delhi airport saw an increase in international traffic from 7.22 lakh passengers in Feb 2022 to 9.83 lakh passengers in March.

Moreover, since the government has resumed all International flights starting Mar 27, 2022, this number will further increase in April 2022.

AAI data also shows that 30.66 lakh passengers made bookings in Delhi airport in Feb 2022, while 40.92 lakh passengers were recorded in March.

“The Covid-19 pandemic had hit the world hard. Travel restrictions had badly affected the travel and tourism sectors for two consecutive years. But now, with the rise in the number of vaccinated people across the world, governments are easing travel restrictions and slowly opening up their borders,” said the CEO of Delhi International Airport, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.
