On Saturday, more than 3,300 Covid-19 infections were reported by China. As the country now steps up to stem the spread, it can now see the worst outbreak since the early days of the pandemic.

3,300 Covid-19 Infections

On Sunday, the National Health Commission confirmed as many as 1,807 confirmed local infections and 1,315 asymptomatic local cases. It was the northeastern province of Jilin which accounted for more than 2,100 cases. More than 200 imported cases were also reported by the country.

After the virus’s first epicentre Wuhan, China is grappling with new domestic infections that are jumping at a similar rate. Stringent measures to stem regional clusters were vowed on Saturday by Vice Premier Sun Chunlan. To keep up with the spread of virus, she urged officials to roll out rapid antigen tests on top of nucleic acid testing. She said that the country should “resolutely hold the bottom line of avoiding resurgence of scale”.

Steps To Curb The Virus

Last week, five rapid Covid antigen tests developed by domestic companies were approved by China.

According to a report by chinastarmarket.cn, which is affiliated to Shanghai United Media Group, one of the firms that got the clearance, Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech Co.has signed a deal to sell its kits through DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group Co.’s outlets and online platform.

To curb the contagion, regional governments are stepping up efforts. According to a statement released by the municipal government late Saturday, Shanghai has asked people to provide negative nucleic acid test results within last 48 hours if they want to leave or enter the city.

The Beijing Daily reported that due to the cluster outbreak in Dongguan city on March 1, six officials, including a deputy chief of the provincial public security department, were removed from their posts in the Guangdong province.
