Travel Without Reservation In Train! Indian Railways Resume General Class Coaches

Indian Railways has now announced that general class passenger services that were suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis will now resume operations.

In order to curb the disease of COVID-19, the national transporter had stopped the services of trains across India.

Read on to find out all the details about this new announcement by the Indian Railways.

Indian Railways To Resume General Class Passenger Services

To limit the spread of the virus, fully reserved ‘special trains’ were being operated by Indian Railways during the pandemic. General second-class coaches were also converted to reserved coaches.

A circular by the Railways states, “In trains already restored with regular train numbers, second class accommodation shall be earmarked reserved or unreserved as per applicability during pre-pandemic period.”

In November, we reported that Covid-19 special trains will be phased out because of a prolonged drop in new infections in the country.

The Indian Railways said on Friday that the “special” tag for mail and express trains will be phased out and ticket costs will revert to pre-pandemic levels with immediate effect.

Second Class Accommodation of Special Trains To Resume Pre-Pandemic Status

Additionally, a railway spokesperson has stated that in regular trains, second class accommodation of special trains will also be reserved or unreserved as per policy. These are presently being operated as holiday special trains.

He said that if there are four unreserved general seating coaches in a train during pre-pandemic period, but are now being operated as 2S reserved class, they will again be brought to their unreserved coaches status. This will be in effect from Advance Reservation Period (120 days hence) or no booking date (date from which no passenger has booked reserved ticket in 2S class).

As per the spokesperson, “However, if a train had few GSCZ or similar type of coaches running as reserved second sitting coaches (2S class) in pre-Covid times, these shall continue as reserved sitting coaches in those trains even now.”

Also, general coaches in holiday specials or other special trains will be reserved or  unreserved as prevailing during pre-pandemic period.
