A new report has suggested that the company is planning to build its own car.

Spotted by GizmoChina, according to an iFengNews report, Xiaomi is planning to work on a car project. Unlike India, Xiaomi in China already offers a wide range of products apart from smartphones and accessories. Given companies are jumping in to build cars for the future, Xiaomi also wants a piece of the cake.

Reports consider it a strategic decision, though nothing much about the development is known. The project will directly be led by Founder and CEO, Lei Jun. Take this with a pinch of salt the company is yet to finalise anything or respond to the rumours.

Back in 2013, Lei Jun visited the US twice to meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The EV market is experiencing a major spike in both sales and interest among car buyers. With the rise in popularity, more companies will be joining in to build their own smart EV, specifically tech companies. For Xiaomi, it has a lot to diversify with a completely new market to tap in.
