Where working conditions are concerned, some of India’s biggest startups have scored the bottom positions as revealed by a new study.

Swiggy, Zomato, Uber India Score 1 Of 10; Urban Company, EKart Top Score Highest
The popular online food delivery platforms Swiggy, Zomato, and ride sharing app Uber India have scored a measly 1 out of 10 for their working conditions. Urban Company and Flipkart’s logistics arm EKart have scored the highest, i.e., 8 and 9 out of 10 respectively.
This is revealed by a study called Fairwork India Ratings 2020: Labour Standards in the Platform Economy. The study rates the companies based on five factors, which are fair play, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.
The study states, “The 2020 platform scores show the heterogeneity in working conditions amongst platforms, corresponding to the policies and management practices that platforms have in place.”
The chief executive officer of Zomato Media Pvt. Ltd., Deepinder Goyal took to Twitter to remark on the low rating.
He said, “All of us here at Zomato take full responsibility for our abysmal scores in this area, and we will leave no stone unturned to perform better in these rankings next year.”
Last year, Zomato was awarded a score of only 4 out of 10.
However, we should note that this year was a year deeply impacted by the pandemic and there were a lot of protests by gig workers. This is the second time such a ranking has been released by the Fairwork Foundation. 113 platform workers were interviewed, and the interviews were conducted with 6-10 participants for each of the 11 platforms.
