On 10th December, Thursday, the foundation stone of the new parliament building was laid by PM Narendra Modi in an event attended by ministers, political parties and international ambassadors.

In the event the Prime minister performed a ground-breaking ceremony, ‘bhoomi pujan’, at the new parliament building site. The rituals were conducted by the Pujaris from Sringeri Math Karnataka.

The plans of the new parliament building are chalked out in a way that it reflects modernism without losing the essence of the Indian culture.

What Are The Specifics Of The New Parliament Building?

The new building will be spread on an area of 64,500 square meters and built adjacent to the present Parliament at Sansad Marg in the national capital. . 

The tweet posted by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad revealed that the new Parliament Building will have 530 seats in media and public galleries of each House for witnessing Parliamentary proceedings.

The Lok Sabha hall in the new building would occupy 888 members and is going to be thrice the size of the current hall. Whereas the Rajya Sabha will have a sitting capacity of 384 members. 

The sizes of lower and upper houses are expanded considering the probability of increase in the members of the parliament. 

Tata Projects Limited will be taking charge of the construction of the parliament building since it won the tender in September this year.

What Is The Building Going To Signify?

“The new Parliament building is an example of the co-existence of the new and the old. This is an effort to make changes within oneself in accordance with the time and needs,” PM Modi said

Hence the infrastructure of the new parliament building is designed to reflect the culture of India with Energy and resource efficient facilities to promote sustainability. The building will also adhere to high security standards equipped with Seismic Zone 5 requirements.

The triangular-shape building which is going to be an epitome of India’s democratic heritage. It will consist of a grand Constitution Hall, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, committee rooms, dining areas and a lot of parking space.

What PM Narendra Modi Had To Say?

While addressing the event that laid the foundation stone of the new parliament building, PM Narendra Modi said, “This is a day of pride for over 130 crore Indians when we are witnessing this historic moment. The new Parliament building is an example of the co-existence of the new and the old. This is an effort to make changes within oneself in accordance with the time and needs,” 

“Old Parliament buildings gave a new direction to India after independence. New building will be a witness to the building of Atma Nirbhar Bharat. In old buildings, work to fulfill the necessities of the nation was done. In the new building, the ambitions of India of the 21st century will be realised,” said PM Modi.

He has also tweeted the video of the entire speech at the ceremony conducted in New Delhi.

The new parliament building is most likely to be inaugurated on the 75th anniversary of Independence day that is in the year 2022.
