The finance ministry has now announced that certain employees will not be given transportation allowance for some months during the lockdown.

Central Government Officials Will Not Be Given Transport Allowance

The Finance Ministry has said that the Central Government employees who could not attend their work place in a whole calendar month. 

A circular issued by the Department of Expenditure states, “The Central government employees who could not attend office in a whole calendar month during the lockdown period are not eligible to draw transport allowance for that month as these employees had not incurred any expenditure for commuting to the office.”

The employees of Central Government are given transportation allowance as per prescribed rates to compensate them for the cost that is incurred on transportation from their place of residence and their offices.

There were multiple references received by the Ministry of Finance about the admissibility of transport allowance, during the lockdown that was imposed on the entire nation. 

Physically Disabled Employees And Pregnant Women Employees Will Not Be Given Allowance

The coronavirus pandemic, which spreads rapidly through people coming in contact with one other. The virus has claimed countless lives and in order to curb the spreading, a lockdown was imposed throughout the country. Many organizations opted for the work from home model during this lockdown and non-essential movement of individuals was prohibited during this lockdown period. 

Several government offices were operating on reduced staff strength. 

In its statement, the government has also stated that physically disabled employees and pregnant women employees who were exempted from coming to the workplace are also not eligible to draw Transport Allowance during the exemption period. These employees have not incurred any expenditure to travel to the office, which is why, they will not be allowed to get any traveling allowance. 

In addition to that, non-entitled officers/officials who were temporarily given the facility of the official car to travel from their offices and residences throughout the whole calendar month will also not be allowed to draw Transportation Allowance. These employees were given the facility of the official car due to the public transport facility not being available during the pandemic.
