Petition For Free Cable, Free DTH, Free Data, Free Voice Calling For All Indians During #Lockdown; Will Supreme Court Allow This?
The outbreak of the Coronavirus has us all in a lockdown locked away in the safety of our homes. However, the lockdown also comes with isolation and losing touch with our friends and family, which might result in people being under distress or even panic.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to make sure that people don’t panic or get stressed during this isolation time. The petition also asks that DTH subscriptions be offered to people for free.
We already know that a multiple of OTT platforms, like Amazon Prime, Eros Now, etc, are offering their content for free for people.
Why is free television and data services necessary for people during the lockdown? How will it help? Let’s find out right here!
Petition Filed In The Supreme Court For Free Data, Calling Facilities, DTH Subscriptions
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by advocate Manohar Pratap, who asks for DTH subscriptions to be free. Also, the petition also suggests that there should be completely free data services and calling facilities along with it.
As per reports, the Telecom Regulatory of India (Trai) and the government will be looking over this request. If data services and calling services are made free, this will definitely help the Government to keep people quarantined and locked down in their own homes.
Asian News International (ANI) tweeted about the petition, which states, “A petition has been filed by lawyer Manohar Pratap, before Supreme Court seeking its direction to Union of India to invoke relevant terms of agreement for unified licence for providing completely free & unlimited calling and data usage facilities to subscribers during lockdown.”
Socializing With Friends And Family Is Necessary During Lockdown
Some of us are dealing with the lockdown completely alone, with our families away from us. Spending so much time alone in such a critical time might lead to psychological issues arising for us. If data services and calling is made free along with free DTH services, this will definitely help people who are stuck alone pass their time and not be mentally affected due to the isolation.
However, telecom operators might not be happy if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the petition. OTT channels are probably the only industry that is gaining traction while the overall economy is taking a turn for the worse.
The ball is in the Supreme Court right now, and it would be interesting what they would decide.
