Microsoft, the global IT behemoth which redefined technology in our lives, has finally conceded defeat in the mobile battle.

If we read between the lines, then in simple terms, Windows Mobile is officially dead.

What exactly has happened here?

Microsoft Says Windows Mobile Is Dead Forever

After December 10th, 2019, Windows 10 Mobile users won’t receive any update regarding their Windows OS. This has been shared by none other than Microsoft themselves, in a note published on their Support portal.

Microsoft will cease to share any update related to:

  • Security
  • Non-security hotfixes
  • Free assisted support options
  • Online technical content updates

Microsoft is ok with third-party apps, which provide support for Windows 10 mobile platform, as they said, “Third parties or paid support programs may provide ongoing support, but it is important to recognize that Microsoft support will not publicly provide updates or patches for Windows 10 Mobile.”

Will All Windows 10 Devices Will Get Updates?

No.

Only those mobiles having Windows 10 OS version 1709 will get the support till December 10th, 2019.

However, older Windows Mobile gadgets, which are not getting the Windows 10 OS Version 1709, there will be no support till the end date, that is December 10th.

For the relatively popular Lumia 640 and 640 XL phone models, the latest Windows 10 OS version is 1703, and this means, that these gadgets will get support only till June 11th, 2019.

By March 10th, 2019, automatic and manual backup services of Windows mobile will end. However, features such as photo uploads, and restoring a backup of a database may work for an additional 12 months.

But since Microsoft will be withdrawing all support, the features may stop working any time.

Here is the list which informs us about the support availability as per the device model number.

Microsoft To Windows 10 Mobile Users: Please Choose Android Or iOS

As per observation by Thurrott, Microsoft has suggested to all existing users of Windows 10 Mobile that they should now opt for ‘other platforms’, which basically means Android or iOS.

In case Windows 10 mobile OS becomes obsolete, then the users will have to choose either Android or iOS, and this is pretty obvious.

But Microsoft saying this, is a clear indication that they have conceded defeat.

The note said, “Microsoft’s mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, compels us to support our Mobile apps on those platforms and devices,”

Interestingly, Microsoft has worked hard on cross-platform support for their leading products such as Microsoft Word and entire Office suite. Both Android and iOS users can now use Office Suite seamlessly on their devices.

What Is The Future Now?

We have heard some rumors, that Microsoft may launch their own branded smartphones in near future, which will have Android OS.

This can happen by this year-end, and may help them to make a comeback.

But as of now, it is clear that Windows 10 Mobile as a platform is dead.

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
