News Rupee Symbol has finally been announced – Here is how it looks like
Its not bad, but personally I think it could have been better – However, the new rupee symbol has been announced and is now waiting the Cabinet nod.
The selection process for the new rupee symbol has been shoddy to say the least – Check out the shocking story on How the Rupee symbol was finalized. But, that is done for now. The verdict on the Rupee symbol is out and the above inscribed symbol is almost on its way to be globalised as a symbol of Indian currency.
The above symbol is one of the 5 symbols short listed from the design competition organized by the government with the prize money of Rs. 2.5 lakhs. The selected symbol, which was submitted by IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, would now await Union Cabinet’s nod for the numerical representation of the Indian Rupee to be the official symbol of the nation’s currency.
The new rupee symbol partially resembles the Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem coupled with two parallel lines – in line with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s vision for a symbol which reflects and captures Indian ethos and culture.
It is said that the Ministry had made provisionary condition for the competition that the symbol designs should be applicable to the standard keyboard. On this, I’m still not sure as to how can the above symbol be typed through a keyboard? What combinations on the keyboard can be used to arrive at the new symbol on screen? This is a very crucial aspect from the perspective of reporting and journalism and should be addressed promptly.
If any of our readers have any idea as to how can this symbol be applicable on a keyboard, please let me know.
This symbol did not reflect the true culture and ethos of India.. It truly reflects the linguistic fanaticism of north indian politicians.. When we have thousands of language script, selection a particular script for common currency is a blow to indian universalism.. Just for money, the designer has designed this.. If he had designed a symbol without using Hindi language script, it would not have been passed in the parliament.. It is a shame to our multi cultured , multi linguistic democracy…
This symbol has already made ba "TVS Electronics" in their keyboards, this button will be used ba pressing "Alt+symbol button" tat symbol is below Esc button..
even LAVA mobiles have come with this..

Delhi High court allows RTI activist Mr. Rakesh Kumar Singh to file PIL against “Indian Rupee symbol selection process”.
Mr. Rakesh Kumar Singh had submitted a LPA petition in the Delhi High Court challenging Delhi HC earlier judgment in which court had refused to entertain his petition challenging selection process of New Indian Rupee Symbol.
After hearing the LPA, Hon’ble Chief Justice and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sanjiv Khanna of Delhi High Court in their judgment said “We learned senior counsel appearing for the appellant submitted that he may be permitted to withdraw the appeal as he really does not have the grievance solely because the symbol has not been accepted but he intends to challenge the procedural aspects which are adopted by the Union of India at various levels relating to such kind of works which affect various provisions of the Official Languages Act and many other provisions of various statutes as well as Article 14 of the Constitution of India.
If we understand the submission of Mr. Sawhney in a proper perspective, he wants to file a petition in the larger public interest.
In view of the aforesaid, we are inclined to permit the withdrawal of the appeal with liberty to file a Public Interest Litigation with the appropriate pleadings and data which are necessary to sustain a Public Interest Litigation.” Order: LPA 310/2011

‘Rs’ selection process challenged in High Cout
…..The matter is to be taken up by the court soon.
The Centre’s defence counsel Jatan Singh denied all the charges and said complete transparency had been followed in the selection procedure. He said there were 2,696 entries of which 226 were short-listed. Five made it to the final rounds and the website was updated regularly with all details.
He said the process that had started in February last year culminated after the Union Cabinet selected the entry by Uday Kumar in July 2010.
In his petition, Rakesh Kumar claims the selection process was in utter violation of the prescribed finance ministry guidelines of ‘public competition’.
He alleged that winner Uday Kumar had submitted four designs against the maximum two allowed, and the chosen selection is just an imitation of the symbols for the Yen and the Euro. “Participants were told the symbol should be in the Indian national language script”, he contended.

New Delhi: Days after its selection by the finance ministry, the symbol of the rupee has got embroiled in a controversy. Two of the unsuccessful candidates have claimed that the selection process to choose the new rupee symbol is full of discrepancies and is flawed. The duo — Anil Khatri and R K Singh — have used RTI replies given by the finance ministry to assert their claim. Designs of both were short-listed, but they didn’t make it to the last five………………….
“Hai na MERA BHARAT MAHAN'”
I have gone through the controversy about how they selected this symbol from outside the ones from this shortlisted..my question is a bit different here…how does one say tht having a symbol means the growth in the Indian economy?..cuz i personally feel that yuan is more stronger without a symbol and prbly yen too doesnt have one…im not against a symbol for the rupee..but wat m against is saying that the symbol shows that our economy is growing..
Yes, you are correct, but it will be more helpful for growing economy like us. Because Hindustan has several neighboring countries, they are also using the term Rupee or similar word to that. A symbol for our money will bring a market value at-least in south asia.
Agreed Aseem… procuring a symbol for our currency doesnot denote that our economy is growing, but it indeed is growing irrespective of that. Its a totally unrelated comparison.
A point to be noted over here that there would as well be no fundamental shift in the value of the rupee on acquiring a unique symbol for itself.
I agree with you on this!
the symbol does not reflect indian cultural and historical ethos, which is one of the conditions of the contest. it is just a mix of roman and devanagri scripts which probably means that India is a mix of traditional and western cultures. But this is true of every nation that has come under western influence. There is nothing specific in it about India. And there is nothing to feel proud about it when almost every country has to say that. It is an insignificant part of our history considering the fact that it is universally true about all countries. There are many things to feel proud about India and none of these is represented by this symbol.
It is not a correct choice.
Moreover the contest itswlf was not conducted in a fair manner. There were many legitimate questions that people raised for which there was no answer from the ministry. The symbol violates rules of the contest. I hope people would file a case against the jury and cancel this selection and conduct a separate selection process once again.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Kumar Singh, an employee of the Uttar Pradesh state government, alleged there were irregularities in the selection process.
Singh, who had entered the competition to design a symbol, said he had sought information on the process under the Right to Information (RTI) Act as he suspected that bureaucratic bungling had vitiated the process.
Details of the replies to his RTI application are posted on the website http://www.saveindianrupeesymbol.org
The seven-member jury was headed by RBI deputy governor Usha Thorat, and included representatives from the Central government and design institutes. She could not be reached for comment.
According to Soni, the cabinet’s discussions did not touch upon claims of flaws in the selection process.
“It was not discussed,” Soni said. “(The) RTI query was neither raised nor discussed.
When asked about Singh’s claims about the selection process, a member of the jury, who did not want to be identified, said the jury was not aware of the RTI application.
As the aim of the entire process is to standardize the expression of the rupee globally, the symbol will be included in the Unicode standard for representation and processing of texts written in major scripts.
According to a government statement, the symbol will also be included in Indian standards, or Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII).
The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages processing on computers along with keyboard layouts.
The government statement added that the industry lobbies for Indian software and hardware companies, Nasscom and Manufacturers Association for Information Technology, or Mait, would ask their members to make changes needed to allow the rupee’s symbol to be used in texts.
According to Soni, the Central government would also ask states to encourage people to use the symbol to depict the rupee.

…….But like all things big, the rupee symbol comes with a dose of controversy. An RTI query has been filed over the selection process of the currency symbol for it not being a fair and transparent process. According to the RTI applicant, not everyone in the jury was present while selecting the symbol. Soni said the RTI query was not discussed in the cabinet meeting…………
It is unfortunate that India is always represented with Hindi everywhere. Why not be broadminded enough to position India as a multilingual
country and give due credit to other Indian languages also?
It is sad and disappointing to know that the Government is determined not to popularize even a single letter from any Non-Hindi Indian Languages.
Thirumalai, I am not sure what you are saying but that is how it should be – Hindi is our national language, a country can have only 1 national language which it will be represented in…
anybody agreed ?
I hate to start this debate here but you’re mistaken. Hindi is not the national language of India. Its the official language of the union. India doesn’t have a national language.
For a quick background of the whole issues check here, http://www.merinews.com/article/hindi-our-national-language/126953.shtml Comments there should also give you insight on how people feel when hindi is thrust into non-hindi speaking people. Language is a much serious issue than just a communicating medium and its better people understand it and respect it.
Here is a report on Gujarat high court’s decision saying hindi is not our national language (there is no need for court decision though, by constitution its not a national language) http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Theres-no-national-language-in-India-Gujarat-High-Court/articleshow/5496231.cms
Here is an in-depth research paper about the language issue in India which has a great deal of information about hindi’s status in India (a long read) http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~jason2/papers/natlang.htm
Hindi is not the National Language. India is a multilingual Country. We can tell the world with pride that India is a multilingual Country. Don’t try to make India a mono-lingual Nation by saying that our country should be represented by one language only.
I feel that it wild. be nice if there is no two parallel lines. It is also unnecessary. This will avoid all the confusion. It doesn’t reflects any Indian ethos and culture. The character Devanagari ‘?’, alone makes sense.
Note: This site doesn’t support Devanagari script( ‘?’ -> ‘Ra’).
Frankly not too enthused with the final choice. The symbol should take into account one important fact – people around the world need to use it. Hence, usability in terms of ease of writing is extremely important which, in my opinion, this symbol does not meet.
I don’t mind the new Rupee symbol. Frankly is it such a big deal? In my view its not, but millions others would probably disagree. If the Rupee were to become a reserve currency, yes, I will be thrilled.
@Mohit, I don’t think the symbol is difficult to draw, when we can draw the dollar or the pound, we can take a minute of practice to draw this too. We just need to be open minded.
@Sukhminder, Viral, even if the govt. took the submitted symbol and refined it a bit, there is no need for controversy. They are acknowledging the contribution made to the right person and that’s important. Again, the symbol looks quite acceptable to my eyes and much better than the original by Udaya Kumar.
@ Madhav… Thanks for your valuable comment.
I’m not doing any controversy on the refined symbol of Rupee. In fact, have a look at my earlier comment in this very post. It has just sought to clear the doubt of Sukhminder as to which of the 5 short-listed symbols has been selected as the final one. No grumbling!! :P
Madhav… I tend to agree with you when you said: “…the symbol looks quite acceptable to my eyes and much better than the original by Udaya Kumar.
@Mohit… Hey, Most of us had a subject in school on Hindi or Marathi as a vernacular medium language. We just need to write the alphabet ‘Ra’ from what we learnt then in Hindi language and strike a straight line a little lower, across the alphabet. :) Easy now?
@Liju Philip On second thought, I agree with your view. Government cannot go on pleasing one and all. We’ve to move on with it. After all, its not that bad.
@Keshav You’re right, the current format of standard keyboard is not compatible to type the new rupee symbol. But, the newer models will definitely t hemuch coveted symbol.
You cant please everyone. There will be some fellow whining in some corner of the country for everything. We Indians love to see a controversy in everything.
The symbol looks just fine and its better we get on with it.
If any of our readers have any idea as to how can this symbol be applicable on a keyboard, please let me know.
it cant be. we need to use a separate key like the key we have for the dollar !
Whatever be the controversy, the choice of symbol could have been a little better I guess.
Please check the post ‘Shocking story on how 5 Indian Rupee Symbols were shortlisted!’ Out of the five short listed symbols shown in this post which one matches with the selected one? Please give its number from the post. As far as I see it matches to none. Right?
Hey Sukhminder… nice point made by you. In fact, I share with your concern. The final symbol has little resemblance with the ones depicted in the short list.
But, I stongly feel that it should be the Symbol No.4, as depicted in our previous article “Shocking story on how 5 Indian Rupee Symbols were shortlisted!”
Yes… Have a look at it :
A typical Devnagari styled ‘Ra’ in Symbol No.4 and not to mention those parallel lines over there. So, that should be it :D
