Travel between Maharashtra’s two biggest economic hubs — Mumbai and Pune — may soon become much faster.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has reportedly invited bids for the next phase of a proposed new Mumbai-Pune expressway corridor that could reduce travel time between the two cities to nearly 90 minutes.

Work Starts On 2nd Pune Mumbai Expressway; Travel Time To Reduce To 90 Mins

The planned highway is expected to run parallel to the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway and handle the rapidly rising traffic load between the two cities.

Officials believe the new route has become necessary because the current expressway is increasingly facing congestion due to explosive urban growth, industrial expansion, logistics traffic, and airport connectivity demand.

What The New Expressway Will Do

The proposed corridor is expected to connect:

  • Atal Setu region near Mumbai
  • Chowk area
  • Pune’s Shivare region

The highway may eventually integrate with:

  • Pune Ring Road
  • Proposed Pune-Bangalore Expressway
  • Navi Mumbai infrastructure network

Experts say this could create one of western India’s most important high-speed mobility corridors.

Why Another Expressway Is Needed

At present, commuters mainly depend on:

  • Mumbai-Pune Expressway
  • Old Mumbai-Pune Highway

While the current expressway was revolutionary when launched, traffic volumes have increased massively over the years.

Key reasons include:

  • Rapid expansion of Pune IT sector
  • Growth of Navi Mumbai region
  • Industrial movement
  • Logistics and warehousing demand
  • Tourism traffic
  • Upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport

Travel time that ideally should be around 2 hours often stretches far longer during weekends, holidays, and peak congestion periods.

The new corridor is expected to act as a long-term traffic pressure relief system.

Massive Infrastructure Vision Behind The Project

Reports suggest the proposed expressway could cost nearly ₹15,000 crore.

NHAI has already reportedly completed planning work for nearly 30 km of the route, while tenders have now been invited for feasibility studies and detailed project reports for the remaining stretch.

Interested companies can reportedly submit bids till June 24.

The project reflects Maharashtra’s broader push toward high-capacity infrastructure aimed at supporting future economic growth and urban expansion.

Real Estate And Business Impact Could Be Huge

Infrastructure experts believe the project could significantly reshape development patterns across the Mumbai-Pune belt.

Improved connectivity may boost:

  • Real estate growth
  • Industrial parks
  • Logistics hubs
  • Warehousing projects
  • Hospitality businesses
  • Commercial investments

Areas located near future interchanges and access corridors could particularly witness rising land demand.

The Mumbai-Pune corridor is already among India’s most economically important urban regions.

Maharashtra’s Highway Network Expanding Rapidly

The state is currently witnessing multiple mega infrastructure projects including:

  • Samruddhi Mahamarg
  • Pune Ring Road
  • Atal Setu
  • Metro expansion projects
  • Mumbai Coastal Road
  • Navi Mumbai Airport connectivity

The new expressway proposal further strengthens Maharashtra’s image as one of India’s most aggressively expanding infrastructure states.

Interestingly, the Mumbai-Pune route has already seen major upgrades recently through the “Missing Link” project involving tunnels and viaducts designed to reduce travel time and improve safety.

Travel Between Mumbai And Pune May Change Completely

If completed successfully, the second Mumbai-Pune expressway could fundamentally transform inter-city travel in western India.

For daily commuters, businesses, logistics operators, and tourists, faster connectivity may significantly reduce congestion and improve overall travel efficiency.

The project is still in planning and tender stages, but it signals one clear thing — Maharashtra is preparing for a future where traffic and economic movement between Mumbai and Pune could become even larger than today.
