India’s Mission Of Bridging Digital Divide

It stated that it is going ahead with its mission to improve Wi-Fi availability for remote regions.

These efforts by the Indian Railways are part of the government’s Digital India Program which aspires to fill the digital gap between rural and urban people in terms of internet access and connectivity .

With this initiative, it could greatly increase the rural digital footprint along with enhancement of user experience.

Who Are The Service Providers?

The Indian Railways has informed that it pays no costs to provide Wi-Fi to the stations and that the service is self sustainable.

RailTel, a PSU which is part of the Ministry of Railways, along with Google, Department of Telecommunications (under Universal Service Obligation Fund), Power Grid Corporation of India and Tata Trust collectively help provide the Wi-Fi facility in the railway stations.

As of today, all Indian states have at least one railway station which has Wi-Fi internet facility available.
