Mahabharat Becomes India’s #1 TV Show, Shri Krishna At #2, Ramayana At #3 – Top TV Shows In India July, 2020
Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, originally aired from January 25 to July 31 in 1988 was a popular show during its time.
Fast forward and come to 2020, the mythological television show has still managed to capture the hearts of all its viewership, making it the most-watched entertainment show with 7.7 crore on April 16, as the most watched show on a single day.
After airing on Doordarshan, the 32-year show was later aired on Star Plus from May 4 at 9.30 pm, on public demand.
Today’s piece is however on another such mythological TV show gaining increasing sensation. It is Star Plus’ Mahabharat, directed by Siddharth Anand Kumar and Loknath Pandey, released first time in 2014.
Star Plus’Mahabharat
Just like Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, 2014’s Mahabharata too managed to capture the hearts of multitudes in its re-run cycle, starting from May 4, amid the lockdown.
It has now become the most watched show on television.
The Broadcast Audience Research Channel (BARC) viewed the pattern of Indian audiences’ viewing habits from June 27 to July 3.
In its reports, it stated that Star Plus’ Mahabharat has climbed up the 1st position from its position on #2, in viewership this week.
Following Mahabharat, is DD National’s Shri Krishna, which until now held the 1st position for two consecutive weeks before dropping to second spot.
Star Plus’ Mahabharat casts famous names like Sourabh Raaj Jain, Shaheer Sheikh, Pooja Sharma, Aham Sharma, Arav Chowdhary and Arpit Ranka.
Top 5 Positions as Released by BARC
Following Mahabharat and Shri Krishna, Star Plus’s Ramayan holds the 3rd position in the list of most watched TV shows.
This Star Plus’s Ramayan is Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, which is re-running on TV, 2nd time in this lockdown period.

According to the details provided by BARC’s report, it can be seen that a viewership difference exists between rural and urban audiences.
