Redmi K20 Is The 1st Smartphone to Feature Qualcomm’s ‘Golden Ear’ Audio Codecs: What Does This Mean?
The rise of wireless earbuds has given rise to a lot of audiophiles desperately looking for good wireless sets. Luckily, for the ones who still have mobile phones with the 3.5mm audio jacks, Qualcomm has announced a new line of audio codecs specifically designed for smartphones: The Qualcomm Aqstic WCD9375 and WCD9370.
As per Qualcomm, one of the first phones to support them is the Redmi K20. Also, Qualcomm has designed this new codec with active support of the ‘Golden Ears’.
More on the New Codec and ‘Golden Ears’
We can now expect exceptional audio sensation with these new codecs developed by Qualcomm, which promises you to experience music and movie audio from smartphones just as the composers intended them to be. The Aqstic WCD937X family includes the Qualcomm WCD9370 & Qualcomm WCD9375 and is built using the same high standards as the flagship Aqstic WCD9341 audio codec.
For this purpose, Qulacomm employed a set of people called ‘Golden Ears’ who register otherwise imperceptible changes in sound. Most of us are unable to perceive sound differences quieter than 1dB, about half the loudness of someone breathing. However, these ‘Golden ears’ can discern minute pressure changes, allowing them to identify subtle changes in harmony. With their help, Qualcomm has designed this codec for smartphones, to provide an exemplar audio experience.
They finely tuned their audio systems and created a a digital audio filter, which smartphones can customize to fit in their respective devices and have their own signature sound. Qualcomm isn’t the first company leaning on the Golden Ears for their help. Apparently, it’s tradition among high-end audio equipment manufacturers, selling their products for $100,000 or more to have Golden Ears evaluate their products. Qualcomm, though is bringing it first time into smartphones.
Redmi K20: 1st Smartphone to Have These Codecs
Among the list of great things we have already seen and expecting from Redmi K 20, the addition of Golden Ears-tuned Qualcomm Aqstic WCD937x series in it, is a dream come true for us.
The Redmi K20 comes with a Qualcomm SD 730 processor, with a 4000 mAh battery, with an 18 W fast charging support. It comes with the newly launched Snapdragon 730 chipset with up to 8GB of RAM and an Adreno 616 GPU for graphics.
Phones with the new codec should provide “far better audio quality” for users. It is yet to see how well Qualcomm stands by what it has promised to offer. This could be next to revolutionary.
