PAN-Aadhaar Link Deadline Extended: Now, September 30, 2019 Is The Last Date
This is the sixth time the deadline has been extended.
Its been a long time since the Government of India has announced the interlinking of PAN card and Aadhaar card mandatory for every resident of India. The last date for this linking was declared to be 31st March 2019. However, the date has been postponed, yet again, to September 30, 2019.
There are four ways to link your PAN card 10-digit number with the Aadhaar card 12 digit number.
PAN-Aadhar Linking Given Six Months Extension
The government of India has postponed the last date for linking the PAN card to Aadhaar card about six times now. Previously, the date was set to June 30, 2018, which was pushed to March 31, 2019. And now, the last date to link PAN card with Aadhaar card is September 20, 2019. There were some reports and rumors about PAN card being rendered invalid if not linked with Aadhaar card by March 31, 2019. However, these reports have been rubbished by the CBDT.
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, “The matter has been considered by the Central Government and now the cut-off date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking PAN with Aadhaar is 30.09.2019 unless specifically exempted.”
There is one minor change, though.
While filing for your income tax returns, it is mandatory to provide the credentials of your Aadhaar card along with your PAN card number. This rule has been implemented and is in effect from April 1, 2019, which is not applicable to people who have been exempted from paying income taxes.
Why Aadhaar Card Linking is Necessary?
While on one hand, banking and telecom sectors have been exempted from making Aadhaar card compulsory, why is linking the PAN card to Aadhaar so important?
In June 2018, the government had made linking the Pan card and Aadhaar card compulsory by March 31, 2019. The reasons cited behind this move was to weed out fake PAN cards and accounts from the system and track financial transactions.
Where people are leaving no stone unturned to skip income tax, this is a rule that will ensure that lesser frauds will take place.
In the recent past, linking your Aadhaar card to your driving license had been declared to be mandatory by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. This rule was well-received due to some practical changes that it brought about, such as the safety of people and the authentication of drivers.
