WhatsApp has launched a new Bill Payments feature in India, allowing users to find, manage and pay everyday household and utility bills without leaving the messaging app.

The feature is powered by the Bharat Connect network, giving WhatsApp users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. The move expands WhatsApp’s growing payments ecosystem and could make the platform more useful for routine financial tasks.
What Bills Can You Pay on WhatsApp?
The new service covers a wide range of recurring payments. Users can pay bills for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments, among other categories.
WhatsApp also allows users to manage multiple accounts under the same biller. This could be useful for people handling bills for their home, office or family members from a single account.
How to Pay Bills on WhatsApp
Using the new feature is relatively straightforward:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen.
- Select the relevant bill category and biller.
- Enter and confirm the required account details.
- WhatsApp will fetch the outstanding bill amount and display the details.
- Choose a payment method — UPI, debit card or credit card.
- Review the information and confirm the payment.
Previously used billers can also appear on the Payments Home screen, making repeat payments quicker.
Bills Can Be Managed in One Place
WhatsApp is also adding features designed to make recurring payments easier to track. Users can view past payments and upcoming bills, while frequently used categories are surfaced on the Payments Home screen.
The ability to keep multiple accounts under one biller means users do not necessarily have to maintain separate setups for different properties or family members.
WhatsApp Expands Beyond Messaging
The bill-payment launch is another step in WhatsApp’s push to become more than a messaging platform in India. The app already supports UPI payments and has been adding services such as mobile recharge and metro ticket booking.
With more than 500 million users in India, WhatsApp has a significant distribution advantage. Bringing frequently used financial services into an app that people already open every day could make digital payments more convenient for many users.
At the same time, WhatsApp faces strong competition from established payment platforms that already offer extensive bill-payment and financial-service ecosystems.
When Will the Feature Be Available?
WhatsApp is rolling out Bill Payments gradually across India. The feature is expected to become available to users on both Android and iOS over the coming weeks, so it may not appear on every account immediately.
Summary
WhatsApp has introduced Bill Payments in India, allowing users to pay electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan bills directly within the app. Powered by Bharat Connect, the service covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories and supports UPI, debit and credit card payments. The gradual rollout adds another major utility to WhatsApp’s expanding payments ecosystem.
