Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced plans for a dedicated Motor Sports City and a separate Olympic City in Chennai, marking a major push to strengthen the state’s sports infrastructure and develop talent for national and international competitions.
The announcements were made in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as part of a broader plan to create modern sporting facilities and expand opportunities for young athletes.
Motor Sports City to Host Formula Racing
The proposed Motor Sports City will feature an international-standard racing track capable of hosting Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events.
The project will also include modern infrastructure and dedicated training facilities. A key objective will be to identify young motorsport talent and provide aspiring drivers with structured training and opportunities to compete.
The government expects the project to promote sports tourism, employment and specialised vehicle manufacturing, while strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a motorsport hub.
Tamil Nadu’s Automobile Industry Could Benefit
Tamil Nadu already has one of India’s strongest automobile manufacturing ecosystems, with major vehicle manufacturers and a large network of component suppliers operating in the state.
The proposed racing city could create opportunities for specialised racing-vehicle manufacturing and related industries. It could also attract companies associated with motorsport technology, engineering, vehicle development and event management.
The state already has established racing facilities, including the Madras International Circuit near Chennai and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. The new project would significantly expand the scale of infrastructure available for international-level racing.
Chennai to Get an Olympic City
Alongside the motorsport project, the government announced a separate Olympic City in Chennai aimed at producing more medal-winning athletes.
The facility is planned as an integrated sports hub with international-standard arenas, advanced sporting equipment, a High Performance Training Centre, Sports Science and Sports Medicine facilities, and accommodation for athletes and coaches.
The objective is to provide athletes with access to scientific training, professional support and competition facilities that can help them perform at national and international events, including the Olympics.
India’s F1 Ambitions Add Significance
The motorsport announcement comes as India is showing renewed interest in bringing Formula 1 back to the country. The last Indian Grand Prix was held at Buddh International Circuit in 2013.
A new international-standard facility in Tamil Nadu could therefore become part of India’s broader effort to develop the infrastructure needed to host major global motorsport events.
However, the government has not yet announced a specific location, construction timeline or confirmed Formula 1 event for the proposed Motor Sports City. The announcement represents a plan to create the infrastructure and talent pipeline required for international motorsport.
