SBI’s New Cash Withdrawal Rule

State Bank of India (SBI) is changing the cash withdrawal charges for customers holding certain Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts from October 1, 2026.

SBI Will Charge Rs 15 For ATM Cash Withdrawal After 4 Free Withdrawls

Under the revised rules, customers will continue to get four free cash withdrawals every month through the branch channel. However, every cash withdrawal beyond the first four will attract a charge of ₹15 plus applicable GST.

The change is specifically aimed at BSBD accounts opened through the branch channel. It does not mean that every SBI savings account holder will suddenly have to pay ₹15 after four withdrawals.

Who Will Be Affected?

The revised charge applies to SBI’s Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts, which are designed to provide essential banking services with no minimum balance requirement.

These accounts are particularly important for customers who use banking services for basic savings and cash transactions.

The new rule is therefore more relevant to BSBD account holders who regularly visit branches to withdraw cash.

Four Cash Withdrawals Will Remain Free

SBI customers covered by the revised rule will still receive four free cash withdrawals every month.

The charge starts only after the fourth withdrawal.

For example, if a customer makes four cash withdrawals during October, there will be no additional withdrawal charge under this rule.

A fifth withdrawal would attract ₹15 plus GST.

A sixth withdrawal would attract another ₹15 plus GST, and so on.

This means frequent cash users could see multiple small charges accumulating over a month.

The Rule Starts From October 1

The revised charges will come into effect on October 1, 2026.

Customers therefore have time to understand the change and adjust how they access their money.

Those who frequently visit an SBI branch for small cash withdrawals may want to consolidate withdrawals where practical instead of making several separate transactions.

This Is Not The Same As SBI ATM Charges

One important distinction is that the new ₹15 charge concerns cash withdrawals through the branch channel for the specified BSBD accounts.

It should not be confused with the separate monthly free-transaction rules applicable to ATM withdrawals.

ATM transactions have their own limits and charges, which can vary depending on the type of account, the ATM being used and whether the transaction takes place at the customer’s own bank or another bank.

Digital Transactions Are A Different Matter

The revised rule is also not a charge on ordinary digital payments.

Customers can continue using digital banking channels such as UPI and other electronic payment methods according to the applicable rules.

The change specifically concerns additional cash withdrawals through the branch channel after the four free transactions.

For customers who rarely use physical cash, the practical impact could therefore be minimal.

Why Banks Are Increasingly Discouraging Frequent Cash Transactions

Banks have been steadily moving customers towards digital banking.

UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and card payments have reduced the need for customers to visit branches for routine transactions.

Cash withdrawals, meanwhile, require physical infrastructure and staff support.

By introducing charges beyond a certain number of transactions, banks can encourage customers to consolidate cash requirements or use digital payment channels where possible.

Other Banks Have Also Changed Cash Rules

SBI’s announcement comes at a time when several major banks have been revising their cash and ATM-related rules.

HDFC Bank, for example, began counting UPI-based cash withdrawals at its ATMs within the monthly free ATM transaction limit from April 1, 2026. Transactions beyond the applicable limit can attract ₹23 plus taxes.

Punjab National Bank has also revised withdrawal limits on certain debit cards.

Bank of Baroda separately has different cash withdrawal and branch transaction rules depending on the account category and type of transaction.

This means customers should not assume that the same cash withdrawal rule applies across all banks.

Why The SBI Change Matters

For most customers who make occasional cash withdrawals, the impact may be small.

But for people who depend heavily on branch-based cash withdrawals, even a ₹15 charge can become significant when repeated several times.

For example, ten withdrawals beyond the free limit would result in ₹150 in basic charges before applicable GST.

The amount may appear small individually, but frequent transactions can turn small service fees into a noticeable annual expense.

Customers Should Check Their Account Type

The biggest takeaway is that customers should first identify what type of SBI account they hold.

The headline saying “SBI will charge ₹15 after four withdrawals” can create the impression that the rule applies universally to all SBI customers.

It does not.

The revised rule is specifically connected to eligible BSBD accounts and branch-channel cash withdrawals.

Regular savings-account customers should therefore not assume that this particular October 1 change automatically applies to them.

How Customers Can Avoid Extra Charges

Customers covered by the new rule can reduce the possibility of additional charges by planning cash requirements in advance.

Instead of making several small withdrawals during the month, they could withdraw the required amount in fewer transactions, wherever practical and safe.

For everyday purchases, digital payment options can also reduce dependence on physical cash.

Customers should also keep track of their monthly withdrawal count so that they know when they are approaching the four-transaction limit.

A Small Change With A Bigger Banking Trend

SBI’s latest move reflects a larger transformation taking place across India’s banking sector.

Physical cash is still important, but banks increasingly want customers to use digital channels for routine transactions.

At the same time, banks are becoming more precise about the costs associated with maintaining physical banking infrastructure.

The result is a growing number of limits, free-transaction thresholds and service charges.

For customers, understanding the exact rules attached to their account is becoming increasingly important.

What SBI Customers Need To Remember

From October 1, 2026, eligible SBI BSBD account holders will continue to receive four free cash withdrawals per month through the branch channel.

Every additional withdrawal beyond those four will cost ₹15 plus applicable GST.

The rule does not mean every SBI savings-account holder will be charged ₹15 after four withdrawals.

Customers should therefore check their account category before worrying about the new charge.

For people who regularly use branch-based cash withdrawals, planning transactions more carefully could help avoid unnecessary fees.

Summary

SBI will revise cash withdrawal charges for eligible Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts from October 1, 2026. Four branch cash withdrawals will remain free each month, but every additional withdrawal will attract ₹15 plus applicable GST. The rule applies specifically to eligible BSBD accounts and branch-channel withdrawals, not every SBI savings account. Customers who frequently withdraw cash can avoid extra charges by consolidating withdrawals where practical and using digital payment options for routine transactions. SBI’s move reflects the broader banking industry’s shift towards digital transactions and tighter controls on physical cash services.
