In a major infrastructure push, the Maharashtra government has approved the expansion of Mumbai Metro Line 5 along with a new extension—Metro Line 5A. The project, worth over ₹18,130 crore, is set to transform connectivity across the rapidly growing Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar belt.

What Is Metro Line 5A?

Metro Line 5A is essentially an extension of the existing Metro Line 5 corridor, designed to bridge connectivity gaps after route changes in the original plan.

  • Length: ~11.83 km
  • Stations: 7 stations
  • Route: Durgadi → Aadharwadi → Khadakpada → Kalyan → Ulhasnagar

Originally, Metro Line 5 was supposed to extend fully to Kalyan. However, due to planning changes, it now ends at Durgadi—making Line 5A critical to completing the corridor.

Bigger Network: Integrated Corridor Vision

Together, Metro Line 5 + 5A will form a ~34 km long integrated metro network with 19 stations, significantly improving urban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Key Areas Connected:

  • Thane
  • Bhiwandi
  • Kalyan
  • Ulhasnagar

This region is one of the fastest-growing suburban clusters, with heavy daily commuter traffic.

Key Infrastructure Features:

  • Double-Decker Corridor
A unique engineering feature between Ranjnoli Junction and Durgadi combines a metro line + flyover, optimizing space and reducing congestion.
  • Hybrid Alignment (Elevated + Underground)
Certain stretches, especially in dense areas like Bhiwandi–Kalyan, have been converted to underground to reduce disruption.
  • Interconnectivity
The corridor will link with other metro lines and existing rail networks, creating a seamless transit ecosystem.

Why This Project Matters

This is not just another metro expansion—it’s a regional mobility upgrade:

  • Expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters
  • Will cut travel time significantly across Thane–Kalyan belt
  • Reduces road congestion in high-density zones
  • Boosts real estate and economic growth in suburbs

The project had faced delays due to land acquisition and rehabilitation challenges, but this approval signals renewed momentum.

The Bigger Picture

Mumbai’s metro network is rapidly expanding into a multi-line, high-capacity urban transit grid. With Line 5A, the focus is shifting toward suburban integration, not just city connectivity.

For millions living beyond central Mumbai, this project could redefine daily commuting—making it faster, smarter, and far more efficient.

Summary
