Apple’s latest experiment with form over function isn’t paying off. The newly launched iPhone Air, touted as the company’s slimmest iPhone ever, is reportedly struggling to connect with buyers.

iPhone 17 Air Production Reduced By 80% Due To Poor Sales

According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, demand has fallen well below expectations, forcing the company’s suppliers to slash production capacity by over 80% by early 2026. Some specialized parts may even cease production by late 2025.

A Promising Design That Failed to Deliver

Launched last month alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, the iPhone Air was marketed as a sleek, titanium-framed alternative to the standard and Pro models. It came with the A19 chipset, 120Hz display, and iOS 26, aimed squarely at users seeking cutting-edge performance in a lighter, thinner package.

However, despite the buzz, the model hasn’t created its own niche. At a starting price of ₹1,19,900 (256GB) in India, the Air sits firmly in premium territory—too close to the iPhone 17 Pro, which offers a superior camera and battery life.

History Repeats Itself for Apple

The iPhone Air’s underperformance mirrors Apple’s earlier missteps with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 14 Plus—both technically solid but commercially weak. Buyers continue to prefer the regular and Pro variants that deliver more tangible benefits over experimental form factors.

Kuo notes that while Apple initially hoped physical store exposure would boost interest, the recent scale-back indicates the strategy didn’t work.

What Indian Buyers Should Know

With production now being reduced, certain configurations may soon become scarce. This could lead to two outcomes: price cuts to clear stock or tight supply driving up resale interest.

That said, models with shorter production runs often lose resale value faster—a trend seen with the mini and Plus variants.

For buyers prioritizing camera, battery, and long-term value, the iPhone 17 or 17 Pro remain smarter investments. But for those who love the ultra-slim design, grabbing an iPhone Air during upcoming Diwali or bank-offer sales might be the best opportunity before it disappears from shelves.
