The General Insurance Council (GIC) on Wednesday rolled out the “Cashless Everywhere” facility allowing policyholders the freedom to obtain cashless treatment at any hospital, including those outside an insurer’s network. Cashless claims are currently restricted to networked partner hospitals only.
This citizen-centric initiative comes after discussions between GIC and health/general insurance firms to ease policyholders’ financial stress and simplify what can often be a cumbersome claims process currently. It is applicable for both planned and emergency admissions.
Cashless Access Now Universal
Under the new process, customers can get hospitalized at any establishment of their choice and avail cashless coverage. This is subject to intimating insurers 48 hours prior for planned treatments and within 48 hours for emergencies. Of course, the claim must still be valid as per policy terms and comply with the insurer’s approval guidelines.
At present, only 63% of claims are cashless as many opt for reimbursement from non-networked hospitals. By enabling universal cashless access, insurers hope to encourage policies and also reduce frauds plaguing the system.
Enhancing Consumer Experience And Trust
GIC Chairman Tapan Singhel noted that a key goal behind “Cashless Everywhere” was enhancing consumer experience – making the claims journey frictionless while building greater trust in insurance through reduced uncertainties.
The industry feels cashless facilities are integral for protecting policyholders’ finances when hospitalized. The move promises improved convenience for customers plus strengthened perception of health insurance for driving uptake across India’s underpenetrated market.
