As we know that the Union Budget 2025-26 is already out and it appears to have allocated a significant amount of resources to the railway sector.

Expecting Major Expansion In Indian Railways
It seems that the government is planning to roll out 200 new Vande Bharat trains which will have facilities for both sleeper and chair car configurations.
Under this development, the centre is planning to introduce 100 Amrit Bharat and 50 Namo Bharat train sets.
Besides this they will also undertake multiple infrastructure and development projects.
Further, the budget has also included funding for the production of 17,500 general coaches over the period of the next few years.
In addition to this, a total of Rs 4.64 lakh crore has been earmarked for new railway projects.
While talking about this budget to the media, the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called the budget “amazing,” further highlighting the substantial financial allocation aimed at transforming railway infrastructure and operations.
“200 new Vande Bharat trains, 100 Amrit Bharat trains, 50 Namo Bharat rapid rail, and 17,500 general non-AC coaches will revolutionise travel experiences for the masses in the next 2-3 years,” the railway minister added.
Further saying that Indian Railways is set to expand more rapidly and safely.
Major Milestones To Be Achieved
The government appears to have committed Rs 2.52 lakh crore in gross budgetary support to the Ministry of Railways for the financial year 2025-26.
This way they are maintaining a high level of investment for the second straight year.
The centre has planned infrastructure projects worth Rs 4.6 lakh crore to improve the railway network.
Further, they have allocated Rs 1.16 lakh crore for safety initiatives, said the Railway Minister.
Adding that the 2025-26 budget reaffirms the government’s focus on improving Railways by approving projects in manufacturing and infrastructure.
According to him, Rs 4.6 lakh crore has been sanctioned for new projects over the next four to five years.
They will be covering new track construction, track doubling, station redevelopment, flyovers, underpasses and more.
When it comes to the Amrit Bharat trains, it will boost connectivity between short-distance city routes.
Moving ahead Vaishnaw said that the manufacturing of general coaches is already in progress, with 1,400 units expected to be completed by 31 March while talking about the production front.
They have set a target for FY 2025-26 is to manufacture 2,000 general coaches.
Besides this, the Indian Railways also aims to achieve a major milestone by 31 March by targeting the transportation of 1.6 billion tonnes of cargo.
It holds a great significance as it would position India as the world’s second-largest cargo carrier, trailing only China.
