Toyota Prepares a New SUV for India

Toyota is reportedly preparing a new mid-size SUV for India that is being widely referred to as the “Mini Fortuner.” Positioned below the Fortuner, the upcoming model is expected to target buyers looking for a rugged Toyota SUV at a more accessible price.

The latest report suggests an India launch could happen around late 2027 or early 2028, although Toyota has not officially announced a launch date.

Expected Price Could Start Around ₹30 Lakh

The Mini Fortuner is expected to sit in a price bracket below the full-size Fortuner. MotorOctane estimates an on-road Mumbai price of around ₹30 lakh to ₹45 lakh.

However, pricing estimates vary significantly across reports. Other automotive publications currently expect a lower ex-showroom range of roughly ₹20–27 lakh. This means the final price will depend heavily on Toyota’s positioning, specifications and localisation strategy.

Rugged SUV Design

The upcoming SUV is expected to carry a rugged design inspired by Toyota’s larger SUVs while being smaller and more city-friendly.

It is expected to compete with models such as the Mahindra Scorpio-N, which has established a strong position in India’s mid-size SUV segment.

Toyota’s objective could be to offer the brand’s reputation for reliability and durability to customers who find the current Fortuner increasingly expensive.

Possible Petrol and Diesel Engines

Earlier reports have suggested that Toyota could offer multiple powertrain options. One reported possibility is a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, while a 2.4-litre diesel option has also been discussed.

Other reports have suggested petrol and strong-hybrid configurations for the India-spec model. Since Toyota has not confirmed the specifications, the final engine lineup remains uncertain.

Why Toyota Needs a Smaller SUV

The Fortuner has moved significantly upmarket in recent years, creating space below it for a more affordable rugged SUV.

A smaller model could help Toyota compete more aggressively in a segment where Mahindra, Tata and other manufacturers have built strong offerings.

It could also give Toyota another important product between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner.

Launch Is Still Some Time Away

Despite the growing number of reports, Toyota has not officially confirmed the Mini Fortuner’s launch date, specifications or final price.

Current estimates point to 2027 or 2028, meaning prospective buyers will have to wait before Toyota reveals the production version and its India-specific details.

Summary: Toyota is reportedly developing a Mini Fortuner for India, positioned below the Fortuner and aimed at rivals such as the Scorpio-N. The SUV could arrive around late 2027 or early 2028, with reports suggesting prices ranging from around ₹20 lakh ex-showroom to ₹30–45 lakh on-road. Toyota has yet to confirm the final price, engines or launch date.
