Pune Railway Station Set for Major Expansion
Pune railway station is undergoing a major ₹442-crore infrastructure upgrade aimed at increasing its capacity, accommodating longer trains and allowing more services to operate.
The station currently has six platforms and handles around 150 trains every day. Railway officials expect the upgraded station to accommodate around 20 additional daily services once the redevelopment is completed.
Platforms to Double From Six to 12
One of the biggest changes will be the addition of six new platforms, taking the total from six to 12.
Platforms 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 are being developed along with supporting infrastructure such as foot overbridges, a skywalk, lifts, escalators and passenger amenities.
Existing platforms will also be extended so they can handle full-length train formations. At present, only two platforms can accommodate full-length coach trains.
₹202 Crore for Passenger Facilities
Around ₹202.39 crore has been sanctioned for customer amenities. Of this, ₹129.57 crore is earmarked for the new platforms and associated passenger facilities.
Another ₹37.12 crore will be used to upgrade existing platforms, including flooring, painting, toilets and drainage. A permanent passenger holding area and a new parcel office are also part of the plans.
Yard Remodelling Gets ₹239 Crore
A further ₹239.64 crore has been allocated for traffic infrastructure and yard remodelling.
The work includes additional platform lines, new stabling tracks and a third main line between Pune and Hadapsar, along with extensions to several existing platforms.
The railway yard is also being upgraded from a 52-kg rail layout to a stronger 60-kg layout.
New Electronic Interlocking System
The project will replace the existing route relay interlocking system with an advanced electronic interlocking system.
The technology is designed to improve operational safety by preventing conflicting train movements and allowing more efficient management of train operations.
Signal, telecommunications and overhead equipment are also being upgraded as part of the wider yard redevelopment.
Three-Year Transformation
Railway officials expect the development projects under the Pune division to take around three years to complete. The new platforms will become operational after associated works, including foot overbridges and circulating areas, are ready.
The expansion comes as Pune’s rail network faces increasing passenger demand and congestion, particularly during peak travel periods.
A Larger Rail Network for Pune
The station expansion is part of a wider railway investment programme in Maharashtra. The Centre has allocated around ₹23,900 crore for railway development in the state, while a separate Mega Coaching Terminal is planned at Alandi with nine platforms and 17 stabling lines.
Together, these projects are intended to give Pune greater capacity to handle future passenger and train growth.
