As many as 1000 people from Amazon will be fired by the ecommerce giant, as a part of the global retrenchment drive.
The company had announced that it would be cutting around 18,000 roles globally due to some economic conditions.
Amazon to Layoff 1000 Employees in India
According to sources close to the development, Amazon plans to lay off around 1,000 employees in India as part of its global retrenchment drive. Globally, the company announced that it would cut approximately 18,000 jobs due to uncertain economic conditions.
As per sources, “The global retrenchment drive will impact around 1,000 employees in India. Most of the employees impacted would be part of various pilot projects, in areas like kirana, MSMEs and other retail products and services.”
Because many of them fail, they are closed down, and the employees who worked on them are either redeployed or moved on.
Amazon employs approximately 100,000 people in India, and the move will affect 1% of the workforce.
Amazon To Layoff 18000 Jobs Globally
In a blog post published on Thursday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy informed employees of the company’s decision to eliminate 18,000 jobs globally. Amazon employed approximately 1.6 million full-time and part-time employees as of December 31, 2021.
Between the reductions announced in November and the ones announced today, we expect to eliminate slightly more than 18,000 roles. Several teams are affected, but the majority of job cuts are in our Amazon Stores and PXT organisations.
Due to the ongoing economic downturn, Amazon India has also reduced the number of products and departments in India. Amazon shut down its food delivery service in December 2022, just over two years after it launched.

Amazon launched its food delivery service in India in May 2020 in parts of Bengaluru, later expanding the service across the city, but the platform was never heavily marketed or promoted.
Amazon has assured its restaurant partners that it will honour all payments and other contractual obligations. Restaurants will have access to all Amazon tools and reports until January 31, 2023, and Amazon will also provide support for any compliance-related issues until March 31, 2023.
Aside from its food delivery business, Amazon shut down its edtech platform in India in November 2022, where it prepared students for competitive exams. The company stated that it will phase out the unit beginning in August 2023 and will initiate a full refund of the fees collected from students in the current batch.
