Bharti Airtel has launched a new “Priority Postpaid” service powered by 5G network slicing technology, becoming the first telecom operator in India to commercially deploy the technology for retail mobile users.

The company said the service is aimed at premium postpaid users who require faster, more stable, and reliable connectivity during periods of heavy network congestion.

What Is 5G Network Slicing?

5G network slicing allows telecom operators to create dedicated virtual sections within the same network infrastructure. These “slices” can prioritize certain users or applications for better speed, lower latency, and more stable performance.

According to Airtel, Priority Postpaid users will receive network priority during high-traffic situations such as crowded events, business districts, airports, concerts, and peak usage hours.

The company said the technology is especially designed for customers who depend on uninterrupted connectivity for work, online meetings, entertainment, and collaboration.

Airtel Focuses On Premium User Segment

Reports said the launch forms part of Airtel’s broader strategy to strengthen its premium subscriber base amid rising competition in India’s telecom market.

Telecom companies are increasingly focusing on premiumisation instead of only tariff hikes by offering differentiated network services, digital subscriptions, and high-value plans.

Industry analysts noted that postpaid subscribers generally generate higher Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) compared to prepaid customers. Airtel recently reported its ARPU rising to ₹257 during the March 2026 quarter.

Available Across Postpaid Plans

According to reports, the Priority Postpaid feature will be enabled automatically for existing Airtel postpaid customers. Prepaid users can reportedly migrate to eligible postpaid plans through the Airtel app or physical retail stores.

The company has not yet disclosed whether the service will involve additional charges beyond existing postpaid plan pricing.

Telecom Industry Moves Toward Advanced 5G Services

The launch reflects the telecom sector’s growing focus on advanced 5G capabilities beyond basic mobile internet services.

Globally, network slicing is expected to support enterprise services, autonomous vehicles, smart manufacturing, cloud gaming, industrial IoT, healthcare systems, and low-latency applications.

Indian telecom operators have increasingly expanded standalone 5G infrastructure to support such advanced use cases.

Competition Intensifies In Telecom Sector

India’s telecom industry has witnessed intense competition over subscriber retention, tariff increases, and 5G rollout expansion.

Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea continue competing aggressively across 5G deployment, broadband expansion, enterprise services, and premium customer acquisition.

Industry observers said differentiated network experiences could become an important battleground as operators seek higher-paying subscribers and improved profitability.

Summary

Bharti Airtel has launched “Priority Postpaid,” India’s first commercial 5G slicing-based mobile service for retail users. The service promises faster and more reliable connectivity during network congestion by prioritising postpaid users through dedicated virtual network slices. Airtel said the offering targets premium customers as telecom operators increasingly focus on differentiated 5G services and higher-value subscriber growth.
