10 Advantages Of Government Jobs Over Private Sector Jobs
For most middle class Indians, there has been one perpetual dilemma – whether to go for a private sector job or the government sector job. In last couple of decades private sector jobs came in vogue, before which Government job was the ultimate prize for a job seeker.
Looks like we are back to the times where Government jobs are starting to get attractive again. This article here discusses the advantages of the government jobs over private sector jobs.
Although the government jobs have often been seen as the one with relatively lesser monetary benefits but with the advent of 6th pay commission, the scenario has changed for good.
Earlier, Indians were more inclined towards the private sector jobs, but now, the belief in public sector’s jobs even by the young generation is increasing.

Advantages of Government Sector Jobs over Private Sector
1.) Job Security
The biggest advantage of Government job is “Job Security”.
Private sectors are prone to layoffs and we have very well witnessed such layoffs in the past during the time of recession. Whereas, in government sectors the situation of the employees more or less remained same and the job positions remained intact.
2.) Pay Structure
Now the next significant factor would that be of the pay structure, as it is a very important factor for any job-searching individual. After the introduction of the 6th pay commission, the pay, which a government employee gets, is in par with the corporate sector and I don’t think that you would have anything to complain about here!!
3.) Working Hours
Personally I think the next factor an employee would scratch his head over is of the number of working hours he / she has to input and that is a big plus over private sector. In government sector jobs, there are standard working hours, unlike private sector ones, where an individual has to do overtime against ones wishes (many time without any benefits as well). And if at all situation demands a government employee to do overtime, then he / she is entitled to attractive overtime benefits.
4.) Promotions
An important factor, which any job seeker would take in account, is the promotional benefits. In government jobs, promotion is always based on the service period hence, the longer you work, and higher are the promotional opportunities. Obviously, this can be called as advantage as well as disadvantage because for someone who is above average may not be able to grow faster than his average counterparts
5.) Benefits & Perks
Next comes the benefit & perks a Government employee gets. For government jobs, many benefits such as retirement benefits, pension plans and funds exist moreover benefits such as medical, housing, loans, childcare etc. are also available. While some large private sector companies do offer such benefits, majority of them don’t offer except for mandatory ones.
Retirement becomes a factor and in the later part of our career and the retirement age of 60 years and in some cases of 58 years ensures longevity of an individual’s career.
6.) Work Stress
Government sector jobs are not at all stressful when compared to the jobs in private sector. The work load in governments jobs even if high would have more than enough time frame to complete it in the best manner possible unlike that of private sector jobs.
And here are some additional ones as well.
7.) More facilities – Government jobs provide more facilities like internet, telephone subscription, LTC. While the quality of the services is debateable, it is nonetheless and advanatge
8.) Inevitable salary increment – In government jobs your salary will increase which will have no correlation with your performance. While it is great if you are hard-working, increments happen whether are not you perform. So, for over-achievers, it may be actually a dis-advantage, but if you are an average performer, this is great.
9.) More holidays – There are more Government holidays in Government jobs compared to private sector. In addition you also have a 5 day work week. To add to all this, you also have certain amount of paid holidays in a year.
10.) Respect – If you are a government employee then you will get respect from a subset of government employees and people because of your position and power.
To conclude, the main benefits of working with government organizations is the reputation associated with it on a whole as well as the numerous opportunities coming up in recent times due to stellar growth of Indian Economy.
Also, I would like to highlight that Private Sector jobs do have their own advantages as well, and in many cases a Government job may not be right for an individual.
Would love to hear your comments on this!

As per me every human being needs security and getting that security in private sector is questionable if u r working some project and if market requirement is also same then you are sky high but if not although how much u work it will literally if no use because u r not getting that much how much u r putting in. Its not like that if u r working in government sector in government sector means u r not having any dreams or any goals and if u r working in private sector u having all of it….
At young age everyone has that energy to do something to prove something but later on when u r looking for stable life or planing to have a family then everyone obviously looks for security and that security we are getting into government jobs thats it…..
In India Govt. The job is far better than private jobs after seventh pay commission. Most of the youngster move toward this area after completion graduation
Hi! I am a computer science student pursuing B.Tech from IP university. I am really confused which way to choose between the government and private jobs. Since i my branch is Computer Science i doubt whether i will get the same rise in levels and promotions .Because i want to remain in the same Computers Line and want a godd suitable government job also. But i don’t find much scope for computer science students in the government jobs.
First of all, never go for a Govt. job except you belong from the reserved or benefitted class of the society. There you have to work under a boss (most probably 49.5%+ ) who have never studied in his life and will give you order all the time. Apart from CSE, study hard (if you really do then) and look for MNCs.
Hi ,
Topic is very interesting. Private sector vs government sector . I think both job is better according to situation . if any body wants to get reputation, status, respect ,name and fame, power and, security than he choose gov sector .bcz private sector has no power any thing like gov sector. My opinion as well as device if you have talent as well as if you have dare to dedicated some thing than you choose gov sector. Gov sector is more than interesting
If you want to touch the sky, private sector. I have seen ACP of delhi standing folded hand for Ratan tata security.
Bro compare between employee of Tata and acp not between Ratan Tata himself because not all employees becomes Ratan Tata
If U are able to take more risk and intended to earn more money then U choose Private sector jobs
While some of facts provided in the main article are outright incorrect (e.g. Private Sector jobs are less attractive on perquisites), I think there is nothing called a ‘better’ job. It depends on what one expects from a job. A person, who is talented, has creative mind and well qualified probably should join select sectors in Private rather than, say, a job in an Enforcement department (Govt. job). We Indians have a typically feudal mentality of linking a job with prestige and power only rather than fulfilling ones’ own interests and aspirations. I strongly feel our younger generation should choose their career / job based on what they really like to do and not where power, prestige or money necessarily lie. Hence there is nothing called ‘better’ job, only a ‘suitable’ job.
I am agree with you, also i wanna share that , nowadays govt job has more burden than private sector, it’s not for innovative people..I prefer private job/ private business…As you are your own boss…
Hi guys…. i think that it depends on your choice that where you want to go like govt. job or pvt. job.
just sit alone and think wise that what are your abilities…your aim…your goal… than go ahead.
Best of luck to all friends for your bright future.
Simple answer: If your talent is your job just go for private.if you have talent in something else but are willing to serve people(at least) simultaenously fulfilling you dream, go for govt.
Working for private company? .Who respects you , your juniors? May be. And what about you? What ever manager says in meeting we simply smile at him and laugh at all bullshi* jokes he plays(Not my condition tough).Once you leave the office who respects you solely depends on your personal life. But you will have a private life ,no one bugs you. While in government sector everyone calls you SIR , you will have large circle. Your neighborhood stare at you all the time. You get a beautiful wife.(typical Indian Mentality for govt jobs). But you wont be commended for any extraordinary things you do.As far as what i can say at the earlier stage of life Private should be preferred, but later on govt job is better for enjoying life.
Somehow u r right!!!
yeah i am very excited to get the job of government sector as far as i know and as far as i know that government has a lots of kind of facility and opportunity.
If you
1. Are a quick learner and wants rapid growth,
2. inherit creative skills,
3. Are workaholic (who live for work),
4. Believe in “sky is the limit” or,
5. Have future plans for a business.
Please, go for private sector.
If you
1. Have hell lot of family responsibilities,
2. Have no earning member in family (medical facility for family is a big relief in itself),
3. Are average can’t struggle much with your brain,
4. Are physically Impaired (NO JOBS IN PRIVATE SECTOR) or
5. Have other interests to serve in life than your job.
Simply go for goverment sector
I m working in PSB from 2013 and I m very happy.I m working in agri loans and helping to farmers in many ways and gets satisfaction in my work.there is a lot of opportunity to learn a lot of things in psbs.previously I m worked in private sector for 2 years and it’s really hard to work more than 14 hours per day and transport 2 hours in Bangalore.its better to choose public sector than private sector even though my salary in less when compared to my previous job.
First of all 90 percent of people working in govt sector join it for its perks and not for contributing anything to society, we people who r working in pvt sector contribute to society through taxes while a govt sector employee evades taxes and lives a luxurious life by splurging on money of common people. the only difference is it is tough to enter govt sector but easy to survive while it is easy to enter private sector but tough to survive and its survival that ultimately matters which proves your worth with respect to peers so spare me the bullshit that people cracking govt sector jobs are more talented than people working in pvt sector jobs. Tell me how many candidates crack UPSC or State Civil Services exams in a single attempt, most crack after 3-4 attempts so that only proves there is no talent , it is mostly hardwork and practice which helps you to crack govt sector entrance exams. Also what contribution r these govt sector employees esp in Civil Services or PSUs r making, most PSUs are running on loss like Air India, Railways and are dependent on Govt Subsidies so pause and think this is the reality of govt jobs and yeah who can forget the reservations , undeserving candidates get through by help of SC/ST and OBC quota which has completely plagued the system with inefficiencies. One day I was in SBI and to generate my ATM pin they took 1 hour!! this is the efficiency of govt sector organizations so to hell with your crap, yes pvt sector life is hard but it is meant for deserving people who are not corrupt and who live life on their own abilities
No govt employee can evade tax. And both sectors have talented people. The most talented brains of the country join IAS . take out ur frustration somewhere else.PSUs, railways etc are running on loss bcoz they are not profit minded like u. So cut the crap and go to hell
I agree with Krishna.
To add here, corruption lies everywhere. I think Prashant is too naive with how the business world works. It all depends how the individual sees at things. Govt employees too have talent! Get your facts straight.
yes private sector is excellent according to you and some other people like you. excessive slavery, firing ,heart attack, BP, cancer , spondylitis, diabetes and many other diseases arise from private sector jobs. You are using productivity of your cerebral skills for few bucks after spending decades in education .In the name of talent and creativity ,you are exploited and put up to death at end.Do these private sectors ever mention the name of any employee who contributed to their oraganization ?No is the answer. These private sectors aggrandise their profits and turnovers thats all.
everyone is trying to achieve his level of incompetency…..
those who love to work day night screwing their mind ol night long must go with private sector
but private sector employee must not think that govt employee are getting salary for free
yes you can think of some people getting salary of free but other who love to work, have the decision making authority and have to take such decision which affect most of the people (including those working in private sector) of that place, community or society are doing more work that private sector employee because they are taking decision some of which are very crucial. and affect life of all members of socity e.g. student, employee etc
those who work in private and are the expertise of their field they may get more respect in the society coz they have worked hard to get that respect and money
so its not like that you wont get any respect in private if ur expertise of you field govt or any other institute or any corporation may call you to tackle the problems….
so its not about money or respect its ol about what you wish to do, what is ur intrest…. a iitian first rank holder Computer science branch student leaved iit coz he want to study physics and his professor know that he is an extraordinary student so they approach MIT to took him in 2 year directly.. and hi is doing very well now in cambridge university..
what you find here is 2 things his intrest and hardword so just show you hard work in the field of your interest you will surely get money, respect and value added to your profile…..
i want to say one more thing that i have seen a lot of blog today such as ias vs mba, govt. vs private, and i am sure only those persons who are confused in thier mind about thier objective they only take part in such conversation….. and belive me it is a state of mined which cannot be washed though conversation or advice…. the more you involve yourself in conversation the more you get confused….
and dont think of the job security, job security is only for those who dont work they are just earning and eating….. those who really work for govt they are never secure
Am a b.tech final year student . I don’t know which sector is best …
you are don’t know your future…..so how your job is secure when your life is not secure…plzzzz…..what you like…..rest or work…resr then do govt and work then do private….24 hours……these hours what you can do…..and one thing….8 hour sleep..give those job…..gud luck
Goverment jobs are more secure
I think both sector are good becz if u have good skill than u can choise any one but in private sector rate is very fast I think so
I also like Government Job even though I feel that to live a better life one should do Private Job and then start a Small Business.
If you are a typical India who loves to live a secure life then their no other option, just prepare hard and smart to get a good job in Indian Government.
yes.all points are correct. specially government employees have special reputation in society.everyone is king in themselves
Sir i have completed engg in electronics and communication on 2012.but after ,when I am searching job in Bangalore my father was died.my father was working in police dept as a head constable but now compensatory basis they r giving me a government job of class C clerical fda post.sir upto 2014 I didnt worked any where .Sir now what can I do?shall i go for government job or private job ? Help me….
no doubt gov jobs are best, but it requires a lot of dedication and hardwork to get into it. if a private sector employee earns 5 crore p.a. and marries katrina kaif, still he can’t earn reputation and respect that an IAS, defence officers have
well said pallavi, i really like your words:)
Hi, nice topic, it not only gives awareness about the government job, but also it gives inspiration to get the governement job, but those people who think that they are genius and talented please dont try to get the governement job, your life will became screwed up.
Hi Harsha,
People who are genius and talented only can get the government jobs. Not all can get those jobs.
Because it is very difficult to get the government job, so everyone is getting into the private sector and it is easy to get into the private job for the people who are not talented and also who failed in b-tech also gets the private job. Please don’t underestimate about the government jobs..saying that we can’t learn anything..if we have interest we can learn anywhere it should be either private or government job…that doesn’t matter
Yes, You need good brain to spread corruption across the county.
It is right that govt job is good. But most of the talented person working at private sector . Hv u ever seen any talented person highlighted in any news who is a govt employee and did a miracle…… lots of person ( like railway, police, army, school teacher ) spend 4-10 Lacs to get the govt job. So where is the talent …..People who don’t believe his ability ( like in govt job) search the job security. because he knows “i might be fail to do my job , but my salary should not stop”. ………. private company does not throw money … they search the talent and hire them with appropriate salary ..
Hello, Please don’t talk about talent, I have seen talent for the last 25yrs, Satellites and rockets or missiles will not fly without talent, Nuclear facilities will not work without talent, IIT’s, NIT’s, and IISC will not product good hands without the talent of the professors there.
I have seen talent in private also, We have give suggestion to them to rectify the problem in many cases.
privet sector job is also important fos us and also for our country
Hi Experts,
Your suggestions are very ..good,,,i have one doubt …
I am working in IBM.. i fed up with if filed..my age is 24 , now i have to move Government job.
Please suggest me my suggestion is correct or not.
Sir, very Intresting Topic…. I have worked in private sector for 9 years… I have much money, BUT no time for ME and my FAMILY.. Even for Leave, there is always tension, JOB RESPONSIBILITY in private sector changed day by day,,, Engineer student is responsible for cleaning the floor as such stupid job is given in private sector….24 Hrs job….phone calls continue in night also…you cant plan for Holiday due to uncertain work given by your boss…….in last i think opening shop is better than the private job due to no time table for personnal life…What means of MONEY if you have not time for family….?? there is no WORK and FAMILY LIFE balance..
Now I am in govt job I have sufficient time for my family and my friends…I can plan for Holiday in advance… so please try for Govt job first….
thanku sir for your valuable advice .it is very intersting topic really.your experience is helpful for mee.presentiy i am doing b.tech. in mechanical engineering from mit muzaffarpur .i had planed for private job but after learning your article my plan has been going to change…………………thanku very much sir…
You are correct sir, but in govt sector there is also much more options, out of them which is best for engineers?
And there is a power in the government sector which you will not get in private sector like Income Tax Officer, District Magistrate (I.A.S), etc. You will not have facilities like Defence in private sector.
very interesting topic,
you choose security, because of your socialconditioning from your parents and sociaty.
Happines comes in life from jobsatisfication .govt job kills you slowly make you slow deppresed,
govt job sucks you slowly
security is an illusin and life only brave people live
you enjoy life when you learn newthings travel more and only private jobs this all are easily ,
govt jobs are more secure
yes real govt jobs more secure but if not intrested in our work and don’t fallow rulls& reguletions thats way to no improved our knowledge and skills and we r not get in good positions.
In pvt sector there is lot of harassment & exploitation of Employees. Govt job is govt job
I Have a govt job , i was a teacher in private sector, believe me govt job offers more security in future, but i lost my peace of mind. Happiness is important. If you love what you do then it doesnt matter weather its a Govt or private job.
being a doctor i am in government service for past three years and enjoyed a good salary but i lost my dreams and my targets in these three years and now i am out of it and feel sure i wil make my dreams come true .
Hi Priya You took the right decision, We should live life and dreams don’t give a damn to what people say. though i have a lot of people from my family telling me that i should not quit a govt job.
Dear Syed,
I am too a govt employee in CAG. Earlier I was in private company (IT sector). Believe me you should compare your life and career otherwise( in private sector) before you take a decision. I am really very very happy in govt service. You shouldn’ compare yourself with a doctor directly. I was in IT sector for six long years. It SUCKS!!
@Pawan – That is very interesting answer… But I tend to agree…earlier, Govt. jobs did not pay too well… but the situation is different now…after fifth pay commission, Government jobs have been paying quite well…and the benefits you get after retirement are far more valuable…in comparison to private jobs..that do not offer anything..
Hi,
I have 3 years of It experience and i want to go for central govt job, please suggest me how i can achieve it.
Thanks
Mahesh
I thing both jobs are better bcz if u r intelijent then u can enjoy in both job.
hi midhat,
I think, you didn’t do private job yet especially IT job it sucks
If you think private job is same or better than govt., then first you really need to go in one of the IT cmnpy. There intelligence doesn’t matter, there is only one thing matter, how much we can polish our boss or TL(team leader).
govt. sector is best b'coj this job is stable…….
I would like to proposed to the government sectors only
whatever job you do whether it is a govt or private nothing is higher than your happiness and the peace of mind…
If we live life in better way then private job is far better in spite of govt.job.
Always The Power / Reputation are the Greartest things… which is there in Govt jobs,,,
public sector job is best due to job security….
private job is good…
Best article vaibhav… I like it. Government jobs help their servant in recession also. There is no guarantee in private sector for the same.
i’think its depends on the person to person if a person have a talent than he go for private sectore and he’s also satisfie of the salary package and no need to grow he should apply for the govement job. if goverment job has a banefit so private job also a benefit to improving ur self.
Bt mam wht abt them who are working under the officers or the boss
They are not capable to get good job they dont have salary package as you told who will provide these type of packages to a irrlitele person.
Can you tell me this please :P
Doing jobs depends on person to person. However, being a private job holder I wl prefer Private one just for some reason..if u hav demag… (2 show his or her talent and get promoted & highly paid),,, agree with me. 4 dis, Our good doctors, engineers, scientists etc..desires to go, settle & work in Capitalist countries.
I believe no matter how high is the salary in private sector is government jobs are far better than private sector jobs just because of the job security you have……..
Government job doesn’t even deserve to compare with corporate jobs
You might be saying this either because you couldn’ make it or you don’t know about it!!
Private jobs have various benefits but lack job security. Same is the reason of more inclination of candidates towards Govt. sector. After the recession it has increased a lot.
hi all, I am Ex-serviceman and at present I am serving with MNC company and paying good salary, But now have been selected in the central govt as a LDC, where is salary is not enough please advice me which will be right step.
