The ‘multi-device support’ feature is long awaited by users and is finally going to hit the market soon. With the help of this feature, users will be able to access the platform on multiple devices at the same time, without the primary device being connected to the internet.

Whatsapp and Whatsapp Business users can use the beta version of the new feature before it is officially launched for all. 

While the official feature will be launched only in some countries, the beta version of the new update will be launched everywhere for testers to use.

Whatsapp’s Upcoming ‘Multi-Device Support’ Feature

Since over a year, the Facebook-owned instant messaging platform, Whatsapp has been working on a multi-device support feature, which would allow its users to access the platform on multiple devices, like Web, Desktop, Portal and phone at the same time.

Once launched, this feature will do away with the compulsory parameter of the primary device being connected to the internet, for accessing it on a supporting device.

Whatsapp has released the beta version for users who want to test the multi-device feature, well before its official launch.

In order to use the beta version of the new feature, Whatsapp users will need to update their application to the latest version of WhatsApp beta available on Android and iOS.

The user’s personal messages, media, and calls will remain end-to-end encrypted, adds a wire source.

As mentioned above, not all countries will get to use the ‘officially launched’ multi device support feature. However, users from everywhere can access the beta version of the new feature.

How to Use the Beta Version?

For Android Users

• Open WhatsApp > tap More options.
• Tap Linked Devices.
• Tap Multi-device beta.
• Tap Join Beta.

For iOS Users

• Open WhatsApp.
• Go to WhatsApp Settings.
• Tap Linked Devices.
• Tap Multi-Device Beta.
• Tap Join Beta.

Users must note that the (Whatsapp) devices linked to their phones will automatically get disconnected if they fail to use their primary device or phones for over 14 days.

What Features Cannot be Accessed Using the Multi-Device Feature?

While the multi-device feature has been looked forward to by the users for a long time, there are currently some features which are known to not operate while using the multi-device support feature.

These include:

• Pinning the chats while using WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
• Calling from Portal or WhatsApp Desktop to linked devices that aren’t enrolled in the multi-device beta.
• Other WhatsApp accounts on your Portal won’t work unless those accounts have joined the multi-device beta.
• WhatsApp Business users can’t edit their business name or labels from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
• Joining, viewing, and resetting group invites from WhatsApp Web and Desktop. You’ll need to use your phone instead.
• Messaging or calling someone who is using a very old version of WhatsApp on their phone won’t work from your linked device.
• Viewing live location on companion devices.
