Ola, Uber Drivers In Mumbai Give Want 185% Rise In Base Fare; Gives 5 Days To Fulfil Demand

Amidst the ongoing strike, ‘Go Offline’ being conducted by the drivers of cab aggregators Ola and Uber since Monday, initiated in Delhi and NCR regions, further extending to Mumbai, some cabbies have now decided to put a hiatus on the strike for a period of five days so that the said companies can re-evaluate their demands.

On March 22, Monday, the drivers of Ola and Uber went on a strike in Delhi and NCR regions, demanding an increase in base-fare from Rs 30-35 to Rs 100.

Mumbai Cabbies to Hold Ongoing Strike for 5 Days

On Monday, Ola and Uber drivers went on strike in parts of Delhi and NCR, followed by cabbies in Mumbai.

The drivers have been demanding an increase in base fare from the current Rs 30-35 range to Rs 100. For every subsequent kilometre,  minimum value of Rs 6-7 is accrued, which is lesser than the amount charged by auto drivers, stated an Ola driver.

“We are doing this protest so that the company issues a rise in the base fare and we will keep protesting until the fare is hiked, even if it takes weeks we will continue our protest.”

The ‘Go Offline’ strike has also been taken upon by the cab drivers of Mumbai.

Recent reports state that some Ola and Uber drivers in Mumbai have decided to put their strike on hold for 5 days so that the alleged companies can reevaluate fulfilling their demands at this time.

Those who have given the ultimatum got in touch with their respective companies through the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), as stated by a wire agency.

The state secretary of MNS’ transport wing says, “We have listed out a few demands, including increasing the base fare and taking back police cases against drivers. We are in touch with the company representatives. We have withdrawn the protest and given them five days. We will resume the agitation on March 29 if the demands are not met.”

He also added, “The low fares are forcing cab owners and drivers to work for 12-14 hours. This has to end and the company needs to be considerate and think humanly.”

The strike led by Ola and Uber cabbies caused major inconvenience to commuters.
