#BoycottNetflix Trends In India After Standup Comedian Compares PM Modi With President Trump
Hasan Minhaj was earlier banned by Netflix for a show on Saudi Arabia
In a twist of events, the world’s largest on-demand entertainment platform is facing a severe backlash in India.
Interestingly, this whole fuss is about a show conducted by a standup comedian, who not even lives in India.
What is the issue here?

‘Patriot Act’ Backfires For Netflix
Hasan Minhaj is an American comedian, writer, political commentator, actor, and television host, best known for his satirical and witty show called, Patriot Act, which debuted on Netflix last year.
Few days back, in one of the latest episodes of Patriot Act, Hasan Minhaj focussed on the Indian elections and shared some facts and figures mixed with his usual satirical tone and witty antics.
Majority of the performance was directed towards present Govt in India, and chronicled some cases of violence and clash of opinions which happened in India.
PM Modi and his unique style of governing were also ‘targeted’.
A section of the program also talked about the main opposition party Congress and featured a short interview with Shashi Tharoor, who is being accused of murdering his wife.
PM Modi Compared WIth President Trump
In between, several times actually, Hasan compared PM Modi with President Trump, citing a similar line of thoughts and views on a wide range of global/political issues.
The audience had a good time, it seems, and the episode was also streamed on Youtube for free, despite the fact that Netflix is a paid service, and most of the earlier episodes of Patriotic Act were exclusively available on Netflix.
Ofocurse, the objective was a greater reach and more eyeballs.
But this strategy failed. And it backfired.
#BoycottNetflix Trends On Social Media
Without hours of uploading this video, Netfix and Hasan Minhaj started receiving negative feedback and comments for the video.
Terms such as ‘hinduphobia’ and ‘intolerance’ were used to describe the satire of this episode, and the Patriot Act was accused of ‘insulting’ PM Modi.
Users were directly threatening that if Netflix doesn’t remove this show, they will unsubscribe and never return.
Here are some of the tweets which were shared, against this show:

Hasan Minhaj & Controversies
This is not the first time that Hasan Minhaj and his Patriot Show received the hate and threats of a ban.
In fact, in January this year, Netflix actually pulled out an episode of Patriot Act by Hasan Minhaj, after he criticized Saudi Arabia over journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in Istambul.
This is how Hasan had reacted to this ‘ban’ by Netflix:
Clearly, the best way to stop people from watching something is to ban it, make it trend online, and then leave it up on YouTube.
Let’s not forget that the world’s largest humanitarian crisis is happening in Yemen right now. Please donate: https://t.co/znMP8vyJma https://t.co/t2VUDhhIdB

Will Netflix ban his show on Indian elections too?
Or, should they ban it?
