Apple Launches Gorgeous Red iPhone 7 & 7 Plus Starting at Rs. 82,000; iPhone SE Refreshed With Increased Storage
Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launched in India in September 2016 starting at a whopping price of Rs. 60,000. Even though online portals were offering a good hefty discount on the phone online, it did not become that big a seller in India.
Now, the company has silently released a ‘Red’ colour variant of the smartphone across 40 countries and regions. Customers can now purchase the special edition RED iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in aluminium finish to contribute to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS. This product is in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED).
Both the phones have been launched in 128GB and 256GB variants, starting $749, which translates to Rs. 82,000 in India. The phone will be available in the US starting March 24, and other countries including India, Brazil and UAE starting April. The phones do not have any other change other than the colour.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said, “Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way to today’s lineup of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED).”
The special edition iPhone joins the current (PRODUCT)RED lineup, which is available for customers to purchase year-round, including the full iPod line of products, Beats Solo 3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones, Beats Pill+ Portable Speaker, the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case and a range of accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
All the accessories and smartphones purchased from the (RED) lineup will help fund HIV testing, HIV counseling, education and care services in Ghana, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia.
Unfortunately, the price is extremely high for India, and even if people do want to contribute to this movement, it’ll be a task. Instead of purchasing a device that costs almost as much as Apple Mac, it would make sense to fund (RED) separately.
iPhone SE Refreshed with higher storage
The special edition of iPhone 5S or iPhone SE has also been refreshed with higher variants in terms of storage. The base version of iPhone SE will now start from 32GB and go all the way upto 128GB, with no variant in the middle.
Apple has not changed the retail price of these phones, and iPhone SE 32GB will start at Rs. 35,000 with taxes. If you remember Apple was looking to assemble iPhones in India, starting with iPhone SE. This could be a good time for Apple to start assembling these new models in India and get the price down to Rs. 30,000.
iPhone SE did not sell well in India, especially because it was not a flagship from Apple, and was priced extremely high. If you’re looking for a smaller screen iPhone, then SE 16GB is now available with offline retailers for Rs. 19,000 which seems to be a much sweeter deal.
