India’s railway transformation story is getting stronger—and the latest data proves it. In FY 2025–26, multiple trains operated by Southern Railway, including four Vande Bharat Express services and nine express trains, have secured spots among the top 10 most highly occupied trains in the entire Indian Railways network.

This highlights a powerful trend: demand for fast, comfortable, and efficient rail travel is surging, especially in southern India.
Vande Bharat Leads the Popularity Surge
The standout performers are the Vande Bharat Express trains, India’s flagship semi-high-speed services. These trains have witnessed exceptional occupancy levels—often exceeding 100%, indicating waitlists and high passenger demand.
In fact, Vande Bharat trains carried nearly 3.98 crore passengers in FY 2025–26, marking a sharp rise in adoption and reflecting growing trust among commuters.
Southern Railway routes, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have emerged as top-performing corridors, with some services reporting occupancy levels as high as 180%+.
Why Southern Railway Is Seeing Massive Demand
Several factors are driving this surge in occupancy:
- High population density and inter-city travel demand
- Limited alternative fast transport options
- Preference for rail over road due to comfort and cost-efficiency
- Improved speed, punctuality, and onboard experience
Routes connecting major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, and Mangaluru have become critical mobility corridors, witnessing consistent passenger traffic throughout the year.
More Than Premium Trains: Express Services Also Shine
Interestingly, it’s not just premium trains like Vande Bharat that are performing well. Nine conventional express trains from Southern Railway have also made it to the top occupancy list.
This indicates that the demand is not limited to luxury or high-speed travel—there is a broad-based increase in railway usage across categories, from budget to premium.
What High Occupancy Really Means
While high occupancy reflects popularity, it also signals capacity challenges. In many cases, occupancy exceeding 100% suggests:
- Overcrowding and long waiting lists
- Insufficient train frequency
- Need for additional coaches or new services
Passenger groups have already pointed out that such high demand often arises due to a lack of reliable alternatives on key routes.
A Turning Point for Indian Railways
The strong performance of Southern Railway underscores a larger shift in India’s transportation landscape.
With continuous investments in modern trains like Vande Bharat and infrastructure upgrades, Indian Railways is positioning itself as the backbone of inter-city travel.
However, sustaining this momentum will require scaling capacity, improving frequency, and expanding networks to match the rapidly growing demand.
