Pune’s road network spans 2,000 kilometers, with 1,400 kilometers in the city’s older limits and an additional 500-600 kilometers from newly merged areas. Many speed breakers were installed based on demands from citizens or local representatives concerned about speeding and accidents. However, these installations often overlooked Indian Road Congress regulations, resulting in inconsistent designs that posed challenges for motorists and increased traffic delays.

Addressing Broader Traffic Issues

In addition to removing speed breakers, the PMC is assessing other factors affecting road conditions. Surveys are being conducted to identify issues like potholes, uneven surfaces, gaps, and exposed manhole chambers. These factors, along with ongoing flyover constructions on major routes, have led to traffic speeds dropping to as low as 10-12 kilometers per hour during peak hours.

A Measured Approach to Future Installations

The PMC has clarified that any new speed breakers will be installed only if absolutely necessary. Decisions regarding future installations will involve joint discussions between the Traffic Police and the PMC, ensuring compliance with safety standards and minimizing disruption to traffic flow.

A Step Toward Smoother Commutes

The decision to remove all speed breakers is a significant move toward improving Pune’s traffic infrastructure. By addressing unscientific road designs and prioritizing smoother traffic flow, the PMC aims to enhance the commuting experience for residents. This initiative is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety, and set a new standard for urban road management.

This proactive approach by the PMC reflects a commitment to modernizing Pune’s traffic systems and addressing long-standing challenges, paving the way for safer and more efficient roads.
