The next generation of PlayStation gaming could come with a significantly higher price tag than many fans expected. A new leak suggests that Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6) may cost nearly twice as much as the original PlayStation 5, raising concerns among gamers about affordability and the future of console gaming.

Why Is the PS6 Expected to Be So Expensive?
According to recent reports, the estimated manufacturing cost of the PS6 has surged to nearly $1,000. This figure represents the bill of materials (BoM), which includes the cost of key components such as processors, memory, storage, and graphics hardware.
Industry insiders claim that rising prices of DRAM memory chips and SSD storage components are among the biggest reasons behind the increase. Demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centres has reportedly tightened supply chains, making advanced hardware significantly more expensive than it was during the PS5 era.
Manufacturing Cost Is Only the Beginning
The manufacturing cost does not include several additional expenses that companies must bear before a console reaches consumers. Assembly, packaging, shipping, marketing, distribution, and retailer margins all add to the final retail price.
If the PS6 truly costs close to $1,000 to manufacture, analysts believe the launch price could range between $1,100 and $1,200. In Indian currency, that could translate to well above ₹1 lakh, making it one of the most expensive mainstream gaming consoles ever launched.
Sony’s Changing Hardware Strategy
Historically, Sony and Microsoft have often sold consoles at a loss during the initial launch phase, hoping to recover profits through game sales, subscriptions, and digital purchases. However, recent comments from Sony suggest the company is becoming more cautious about absorbing large hardware losses.
With rising component costs and economic uncertainty, Sony may choose to pass a larger portion of the manufacturing cost directly to consumers rather than heavily subsidising the hardware.
What This Means for Gamers
A significantly more expensive PS6 could reshape the gaming market. Some players may delay upgrading, while others could shift towards gaming PCs, cloud gaming services, or continue using their PS5 systems for longer.
At the same time, Sony is expected to deliver major technological advancements with the PS6, including more powerful graphics, faster storage, improved AI-driven features, and potentially new gaming experiences that justify the premium pricing.
While the PS6 remains years away from launch, the latest leak indicates that the next generation of gaming may also become the most expensive one yet.
