Central Railway is developing a vital new 29-kilometre rail line between Karjat and Panvel, targeted for completion by December 2025. This ₹491 crore project is designed to reduce chronic congestion on the heavily trafficked existing route and to improve access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, especially benefiting travellers from Pune.

Relieving Overcrowding on a Busy Corridor
The current Karjat-Panvel stretch carries a heavy load of suburban and long-distance trains, leading to frequent overcrowding. Adding this fourth parallel line will significantly ease passenger flow, allowing thousands of daily commuters a smoother and faster journey within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Modern Infrastructure with Strategic Design
The new rail line will include some of the region’s longest tunnels and bridges, built along a fresh alignment. This modern route will take pressure off the older tracks, which are also being doubled to boost capacity for both passenger and freight trains. These upgrades promise more frequent services and fewer delays.
Part of a Larger Transport Upgrade in MMR
This project complements two other suburban railway lines currently under construction by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, all due by the end of 2025. Together, these initiatives aim to improve overall rail services, making daily commutes more comfortable and efficient across the metropolitan area.
Connecting Pune to Navi Mumbai Airport
A key benefit of the Karjat-Panvel line is enhanced connectivity between Pune and the new Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will offer more direct and faster travel options for passengers, supporting regional economic growth and integration.
Looking Ahead
With three local trains planned for the new line, the project is advancing quickly. Its completion will mark a major improvement in Mumbai’s suburban rail network, easing travel for commuters and supporting the broader vision of a modern, interconnected urban transport system.
