In a big move to enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways has decided to replace the current 8-coach Vande Bharat train on the Gorakhpur–Ayodhya–Lucknow–Prayagraj route with a 16-coach version, effective June 8, 2025.
This update will significantly improve seating capacity and overall comfort, especially amid rising demand on this busy corridor.

🆕 What’s New in the 16-Coach Vande Bharat?
The new train rake will include:
- Two Executive Chair Cars for premium travel
- 14 General Chair Cars
- Enhanced passenger amenities
- Improved stability and ride quality
This upgrade makes the Gorakhpur-Prayagraj journey faster, smoother, and more luxurious for all classes of travelers.
🚆 Speed Trial Passed, Certified for Service
Before its public rollout, the new train rake underwent a successful trial run at 110 kmph between Gorakhpur and Nautanwa on June 1.
- The Mechanical Department issued a fitness certificate
- The Operations Department has fixed the date for full deployment
Only the rake will change, while the existing timetable, stops, and route remain the same.
📈 Why This Upgrade Now?
This decision stems from:
- Surging passenger demand on the Gorakhpur-Ayodhya-Lucknow-Prayagraj line
- Need for better capacity and comfort
- Rising popularity of Vande Bharat Express for regional, semi-high-speed travel
The older 8-coach Vande Bharat rake will now be freed up for deployment elsewhere.
🚉 Same Route, Bigger Train, Better Experience
Train number 22549/22550 will continue to run:
- At the pre-scheduled time
- With the same route and stoppages
- Now with double the capacity and added executive comfort
Passengers can expect a superior onboard experience, whether traveling for business, pilgrimage, or tourism.
