Reliance Jio has revealed a significant advantage of its standalone (SA) 5G network: the ability to extend smartphone battery life by up to 40%. This innovation is part of Jio’s commitment to using 5G technology to optimize both user experience and power consumption, as discussed in its recent Q2 FY25 earnings call.
Power-Saving Through Standalone 5G Technology
Jio’s 5G network is built on standalone (SA) 5G technology, which differs from non-standalone (NSA) networks by not relying on existing 4G infrastructure. This setup allows Jio to more effectively assign bandwidth based on application requirements, reducing unnecessary power usage. According to Kiran Thomas, president of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, this method can lead to an increase in battery life of 20–40%.
Smart Bandwidth Allocation for Optimal Performance
Jio’s SA 5G network is equipped with dynamic frequency selection, which means it automatically adapts to the user’s current activity. If a user is engaged in low-demand activities, such as browsing or using social media, the network connects to a low-frequency band (below 1GHz), consuming minimal power. When higher speeds are needed for streaming or gaming, the network switches to a mid or high-frequency band (1–6 GHz or 20–40 GHz), ensuring a smoother, faster experience without excessive power drain.
This approach ensures the device only uses as much bandwidth—and, consequently, power—as is necessary for a given task. In contrast, other networks that don’t adjust their frequencies dynamically may consume more battery by connecting to higher bands, even when not required.
Jio’s 5G Band Configurations
Currently, Jio operates across three 5G bands: n28, n78, and n258. The n28 is a low band around 700MHz, ideal for low-power tasks, while the n78 and n258 cover the mid (3.3–3.8 GHz) and high (24.25–27.5 GHz) frequency ranges, which are suited for higher data throughput. This combination offers an adaptable network that provides the right frequency for the user’s needs, optimizing both performance and battery life.
Summary
Jio’s standalone 5G network can improve smartphone battery life by up to 40% by dynamically adjusting frequency bands based on activity. With three bands—n28, n78, and n258—Jio’s 5G intelligently manages power consumption and network efficiency, ensuring an enhanced, battery-friendly experience.
