Average Payout Remains Unchanged

Infosys has paid an average variable bonus of 70% to eligible employees for the first quarter of FY27, keeping the payout level unchanged from the previous quarter. However, the latest payout is lower than what employees received during the same period last year, reflecting the cautious environment facing the IT services industry.

The Q1 variable pay covers the April-June 2026 period and is linked to employee performance ratings.

Performance Ratings Determine the Payout

The variable pay distribution varies depending on individual performance. Employees rated “commendable” are expected to receive payouts close to 80%, while those rated “met expectations” are expected to receive around 65%.

The overall average across eligible employees stands at 70%.

The unchanged average compared with the previous quarter indicates that Infosys continues to maintain a relatively cautious approach to performance-linked compensation amid uncertain business conditions.

Payout Lower Than Last Year

Although the 70% average remains stable sequentially, it represents a decline of around 10 percentage points compared with the corresponding quarter last year, when Infosys employees received an average payout of 80%.

The company had also recorded stronger payouts during parts of FY26. The average reportedly reached around 85% in the December quarter before declining to 70% in the March quarter.

The latest figure therefore suggests that the higher incentive levels seen during stronger periods have not returned yet.

IT Sector Faces Uneven Demand

The moderation in variable pay comes as technology companies continue to deal with an uneven recovery in technology spending. Businesses globally remain cautious about discretionary IT projects, while companies are simultaneously increasing investments in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

For IT service providers, this creates a difficult balance between controlling costs and retaining skilled employees who are increasingly important for AI-led projects.

Infosys is similarly navigating this environment while investing in emerging technologies and managing expectations around revenue growth.

Financial Performance Adds to the Pressure

Infosys reported a 3.9% sequential increase in revenue to ₹48,211 crore in Q1 FY27. However, net profit declined 8.6% quarter-on-quarter to ₹7,769 crore.

The company also narrowed the upper end of its FY27 revenue growth guidance, now expecting constant-currency growth of 1.5% to 3%, compared with its earlier range of 1.5% to 3.5%.

Despite these challenges, Infosys maintained its operating margin guidance at 20%-22%.

Salary Hikes to Be Implemented in Phases

Variable pay is not the only compensation issue being closely watched by Infosys employees. The company has indicated that annual salary revisions will be implemented in phases, with the first round expected in October and senior employees expected to receive their revisions in January.

The combination of variable pay and salary revisions will therefore remain an important indicator of how Infosys balances employee retention with cost management during a challenging period for the technology sector.

Summary

Infosys has paid eligible employees an average variable bonus of 70% for Q1 FY27, unchanged from the previous quarter but 10 percentage points lower than the same period last year. Payouts range according to performance ratings, while the company continues to navigate cautious technology spending, modest growth expectations, AI investments and pressure to manage employee costs.
