OpenAI Brings Advertising to ChatGPT in India

OpenAI has started rolling out advertisements on ChatGPT in India, marking a major shift in how the AI chatbot is monetised. The ads will initially be shown to logged-in users aged 18 and above who are using the Free and Go plans.

The move makes India one of the latest major markets where OpenAI is introducing advertising as it looks to build additional revenue streams while continuing to offer ChatGPT at no cost or at a relatively low subscription price.

Who Will See ChatGPT Ads?

Users on the Free and Go tiers are eligible to see advertisements. In India, ChatGPT Go costs ₹399 per month.

Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans will continue to use ChatGPT without ads. This creates a clear distinction between the ad-supported lower-cost tiers and OpenAI’s premium offerings.

Ads will appear below ChatGPT responses when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. OpenAI says these advertisements will be clearly labelled and visually separated from the AI-generated response.

Ads Will Not Influence ChatGPT’s Answers

One of the biggest concerns surrounding advertising in an AI chatbot is whether commercial interests could influence the answers users receive.

OpenAI has said that advertisements will remain separate from ChatGPT’s responses and will not influence the answers generated by the chatbot. The company has also stated that advertisers will not receive access to users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal details.

Ads will also not be displayed alongside sensitive or regulated subjects, including health, mental health and politics. Accounts belonging to users under 18 will similarly be excluded from advertising.

More Than 50 Brands Expected to Advertise

The Indian rollout is attracting significant interest from advertisers. More than 50 brands are expected to launch campaigns on ChatGPT during the initial phase.

OpenAI is also preparing to give businesses self-serve access to its ChatGPT Ads Manager in India from September 4. This could make the platform accessible to a much wider range of advertisers rather than limiting participation to large companies and advertising agencies.

Why India Matters to OpenAI

India represents one of ChatGPT’s largest and fastest-growing user markets. The platform has built a substantial audience among students, developers, educators, professionals and businesses.

Introducing ads in such a large market gives OpenAI an opportunity to monetise a massive free-user base without requiring every user to move to a paid subscription.

For advertisers, the attraction lies in reaching consumers at the moment they are researching products, comparing options or making purchasing decisions through conversations with an AI assistant.

A New Phase for AI Monetisation

The arrival of ads signals that AI companies are beginning to explore business models beyond subscriptions and enterprise services. For OpenAI, advertising could help offset the enormous cost of operating increasingly powerful AI systems while keeping access available to a broad audience.

The bigger challenge will be maintaining user trust. ChatGPT is used for everything from everyday searches to important personal and professional decisions, making transparency and separation between advertising and AI-generated answers particularly important.

If OpenAI can maintain that distinction, advertising could become a significant part of the chatbot’s long-term business model.

Summary

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India for logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans, with sponsored content appearing separately below relevant responses. Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users remain ad-free. OpenAI says advertisers cannot access conversations or personal data, while ads will be excluded from sensitive areas such as health and politics.
